Austerity stifles the economy, which means there is less profit for the oligarchs to skim off the top. On the surface, it appears the wealthy are so blinded by greed they're hurting their own interests.
But I think there'a a longer game at work here.
The Oligarchy is threatened by a healthy middle class that is educated and has the time to really engage in a functional representative democracy -- the informed consent of the governed. The oligarchs eventually would see their hoarded wealth and power pried from their greedy fingers.
What they want is a low wage labor force that is willing to take whatever they can get while fighting over the scraps and against each other in the bitter ideological left/right political divide that has been crafted by those who stand to lose if the common people ever learn to stand together.
It's a dangerous game they're playing, and if they push it too far the pitchforks will come out.

On personal levels whether working or receiving benefits, the 99% when the money runs out or runs low 'live austerity' daily having to decide whether to eat less, pay a bill or go to collections. The 99% other than getting more and more part time jobs till they are working 24/7 do not have options to just borrow endless money with a credit score of 300 and certainly cannot tax people to get more.
Unfortunately the word Austerity to our government brings out the immediate threat of SS/Veterans benefit cuts as the first and only option, those 2 programs are the program cuts of choice the last 4 times there have been calls to not extend the debt but reduce the budget.
True austerity is for the little people, to manage their meager incomes better while governments spend spend spend and any attempts to press austerity to them is just met with threats to cut off the 99% and make meager incomes even leaner. Heavens sake the furor if the 1% or other budget hogs had to reduce spending.

(34,661 posts)Half to think the Military Industrial Complex is more than a bit nervous at this juncture of our Country. Society seems very tense much as the late Sixties. Tons of chatter in day to day conversations and kind of awareness to what the hell is really going on. Most folks only know what they see on their I-phones or Twitter. Our Media is a complete failure as a fourth estate functional entity.
