A done deal, Obama to create Basin and Range monument

WASHINGTON — A vast sweep of rural Nevada marked by lonely desert valleys, craggy mountain ranges and both ancient and modern art will become the newest addition to the nation’s inventory of protected landscapes today.

President Barack Obama will sign a proclamation designating the Basin and Range National Monument on 704,000 acres — 1,100 square miles — of Lincoln and Nye counties, the White House announced Thursday night.

It will be the second monument created in Nevada within eight months and will join 21 others in the West and more than 100 around the country.

Using his authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906, Obama today also will sign proclamations creating the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument in Northern California and the Waco Mammoth National Monument in a fossil-rich area of central Texas.

I believe the Republicans efforts to limit the creation of new parks, and sell off our existing national parks, will hurt them next November.

I will repeat this a few million more times until people get it.

If teaparty gained control of all government, all national parks would be sold, all federal land would be sold, including Waikiki Beach and Yellowstone, etc.

As to Waikiki this may be state land, not sure, but same theory applies if teaparty took over states also.

We are literally a couple elections away from ALL of our cherished land owned by the Walton family and Koch bros, etal.

NOBODY other than the 50 family members of the Walton family will EVER step foot on Waikiki Beach again, or Yellowstone natl park.

Get it?

OR< these vile filthy wastes of space turn these amazing places into disneylandish parks.

think it thru people

Not just parks, but also things like public town squares are being sold off to private interests, and we're granted "permission" to talk in them, but they control what activities can take place there.

Would you really want President Trump or President Cruz controlling all land in the USA?

improve access to this area. It is rugged to say the least, but, wow when is comes to vistas and mineral and fossils. Doubt if you could find a single quart of water in the whole area. If you like hiking, this is the real deal. And you are about a hour and half or so from Death Valley. Hope we see some type of Camp Grounds in the near future.
