http://www.ew.com/article/2015/07/10/kid-rock-confederate-flag-protesters-kiss-my-assNational Action Network political director Sam Riddle said the Confederate flag has a deadly meaning in the Motor City. How in the hell can Kid Rock represent Detroit and wave that flag just generating millions and millions in ticket sales a flag that represents genocide to most of Detroit? Protesters said if Kid Rock does not stop using the Confederate flag, they will boycott the museum where the All Summer Long singer is included in an exhibit covering 100 years of music in Detroit.
But Kid Rock had just one response to the protests, which he released in a statement to Fox News: Please tell the people who are protesting to kiss my ass.

(92,257 posts)protests are that the confederate flag does NOT belong on government buildings. It is a symbol of racism, and this is THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN, not the confederates states.

(4,510 posts)enough. The fact that he made most of his early money and fame off the backs of black people and still waves this flag shows that he's worse than the average racist. Honestly I have more respect for nugent who never pretended and doesn't hide his racism.

(95,337 posts)And I can enjoy not listening to his music or any music of those musicians who wish to fly the confederate flag at their concert.
What we asked is that this flag not be flown at Government buildings. What a private citizen does is their choice. But that Private Citizen has to understand that when I see them holding/wearing/standing by/saluting the confederate flag I see this: I see photos of Klansmen proudly waving the Confederate Flag while lynching African Americans. I see photos of Skinheads parading around with the flag while preaching their hate against anything not white. And I see a photo of a deranged Dylann Roof holding the flag probably days before he walked into a peaceful African American Church where Roof opened fire and murdered 9 innocent African Americans.
If that is how Kid Rock would like for us to judge him then so be it.

(12,393 posts)A fairly good size chunk of the population there are descendants of citizens from Kentucky and Tennessee who migrated to Michigan seeking work during the depression. Although historically both states would have preferred to remain neutral during the civil war, the residents were split in their sympathies. Many remain vocal confederate sympathizers due to their roots.
They were (unkindly) called 'Ridge Runners' and 'White Trash' by Michiganders and there was a definite social division between the two groups. Kid Rock and Ted Nugent sniffed money and made this their target audience.

(95,337 posts)If I'm correct his father owned a huge auto dealership group and Kid Rock actually came from upper middle class background. His family owned some land that included an orchard and even horses Kid Rock didn't 'sniff' money. He had it as a child thanks to his parents having good jobs. But I've seen kids like him in my school where perhaps his father worked too many hours and perhaps grew bored of surburbia. He got into trouble and acted out hence his turn to what you see which is the 'Ridge Runners' and 'White Trash' lifestyle.

(18,497 posts)Our elementary school mascot name was "Ridge Runner."
Of course, it was visually represented by a toddler sized Native American.
And it was't until later years that the significance of the nickname struck me.
I self identify as a hillbilly and ridge runner quite a bit, though. It's a part of who I am, and while my dad was employed throughout my childhood I still feel that.
