Help, DUers! My 2 RW cousins are tag-teaming me about "sanctuary cities"

I'm not terribly familiar with this term, although I loosely understand what it means. What has got them so incensed all of a sudden? Is something new happening that I'm not aware of?

They're going to have an awfully hard time living up to their promises "not to spend one dime!" in a sanctuary city. And, what's it to them? They're two very wealthy retired women. What do they care?

Help me out here, folks. I got nuthin.

3. I just googled the term. Fox and The Examiner have current reports for you.

Also, The Hill has a story about Rick Perry demanding something or other from President Obama about these cities having the nerve to offer services to needy immigrants.

So, when you say you "got nuthin," I have to wonder. By the time I got to Sanctu, google knew what I was looking for.

Hope this helps.

First (hasty) pass didn't lead me to the story of the murder. I also don't click on Fox sites if I can help it. This was an issue that just wasn't on my radar. But it is typical of these two to latch onto a story like this.

As I stated in the OP, considering the fact that the cousins travel more or less constantly and have ports of call everywhere, it's going to be rather difficult for them to live up to their promises. They both own property in sanctuary cities, so I expect they'll be divesting themselves of it shortly (not).

Thanks for the guidance. I'll get myself educated right quick, although I have no hope of persuading them using compassionate (or other) arguments.

to educate every moron on the block. Tell them to spend their money in hotspots like Cranky Corner, Louisiana or Sweet Lips, TN....and be sure to enjoy the nightlife!

6. In the US, we have divided government. It's usually not the responsibility of local government

to enforce federal law. And sometimes important balancing issues arise. With regard to immigration issues, local police need to be able to talk with local folk to investigate local crime, without everybody clamming up because they think local police are going to expand the investigation to include federal immigration violations.

9. This is THE critical point ... immigration is a FEDERAL issue.

People who are determined to be in the country illegally can only be deported by the federal government. A state or local government can't make that determination on their own.

Which means state and local authorities can hand over people they suspect of being here illegally to the federal government.

But, they don't really have to hand people over either. Suspicion is not guilt. And so, a local or state entity usually needs a compelling reason to spend time handing people over.

Now, Joe Arpiao in AZ would hand over any latino he encounters for any reason. He doesn't have to do that, but he's an ass.

The point is, the state and local officials have discretion. They can not deport people. But they can hand over folks they suspect at their own discretion.

Police often let people go for minor offenses of all types.

7. Ask them if they care about the 80+ other gun deaths that happen each day

Yes, the shooting in SF was tragic. Was it more triaging than the others that day? So much more that it is the only one RWNJ seem to care about?

Of course, this is unacceptable to some folks, who seem to live back during the potato famine when no Irish need apply. Not white enough.
