Myths about the "Lost Cause," never mentioning race, came from our schools, from everywhere. Time to smash them
CHARLES MCCAIN
This is where my grandfather shot and killed the Yankee soldier trying to rob us, the retired Army colonel said, pointing to a bullet hole in the wood lining the entrance hall of his home.
My Boy Scout troop was visiting to view this noble reminder of the Civil War and how Southerners had resisted Union soldiers. It was 1970. I was fifteen. All of us gazed with reverence upon the hole as if medieval Catholics peering at the toe of a saint.
We were absorbing the Southern narrative of the Civil War. In February of 1865 Shermans bummers had invaded my small hometown in the South Carolina low country. This mans grandfather had defended his home as any honorable Southerner would have done.
In the history of the Civil War preached to us lads growing up in the South in those years, slavery was never mentioned. Just perfidious Yankees and our brave boys in gray who repelled them until they were compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources, as General Lee described the situation in his General Order No. 9 announcing the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Only a fool would interpret his words as admitting defeat. We werent defeated. We were just compelled to surrender. Completely different, of course.

(21,925 posts)wouldn't surprise me. Such is war. it wouldn't take away from the righteousness of ending slavery in North America. Sherman gave the order to destroy every farm, every cornfield, every railroad, every courthouse, schoolroom, and town in his March To The Sea. The Russians raped and destroyed their way through Germany to destroy the obscenity that was Adolph Hitler. The Nazis and their flocks of admiring civilians brought it on themselves. I wouldn't think the Yankee troopers would be any more saintly than any army in history. War is hell.

(31,112 posts)Owners could kill their slaves if they wished. Rape the femaleswhich they did. (And the males, too). Or starve them. Or make them work for twenty hours a day to get the harvest inwhich they did. Whip them, which they did. Torture them, which they did. Even castrate thema practice so barbaric it was outlawed in the Roman Empire by successive decrees of Emperors before the coming of Christ.
It boggles my mind how some right-wing people think that the white people did the blacks a favor by enslaving them.

(36,827 posts)Religious leaders were a very big part of why the Civil War happened in the first place. African-Americans were given the "gift" of the word of god, which gave them an opportunity to save their immortal soul (completely unverifiable), which they would not have had otherwise. Many wingnuts still believe that garbage today.

(8,028 posts)...the "negro" was better off in slavery. Remember Cliven Bundy?...
And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do? he asked. They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And Ive often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didnt get no more freedom. They got less freedom.

(50,404 posts)Thanks for posting this, it is an excellent explanation of the reason for the continued clinging to the lie "the lost cause" by so many southerners, written by a southerner.

(36,827 posts)It's as if there's some kind of romantic notion about the fight against good and evil where those roles are exactly backwards. While it seems simple and stupid to the casual observer, the realities are far more complicated. It's kinda like religion in the respect that repeating a lie often enough may not make it true, but the effect is exactly the same.

(50,404 posts)where everything they are taught, surrounded by and protected from 'outside' influences was very close. The myth of the 'honorable lost cause' is inculcated from birth through family, surroundings and even the education system, so intrinsic to those who cannot accept all they know about the civil war is wrong.
The damage and havoc created by the continued perpetuation of that myth continues to today.

(7,234 posts)didnt allow blacks to vote for nearly 100 years, denied them of an equal education, promoted segregation, prevented interracial marriage, conducted forced sterilization, made sure that the only jobs available to black people at that time were working in the fields or cleaning houses, beat and turned water hoses on people who just wanted to be equals.
It was great men like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington who stood for liberty, freedom and were anti slavery this is why I fly the America flag with pride. This flag stands for everything opposite of the confederacy.
