Former US president George HW Bush has broken a bone in his neck following a fall at his home, but his condition is not life-threatening, his official spokesman has said.
A tweet posted by Jim McGrath said the former president referred to as 41, denoting his status as the 41st holder of the office had fallen at his home in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Bush, who is 91, broke a bone in his neck and will require a neck brace, but his condition is stable and he is fine, McGrath said.

(836 posts)Old people fall - but if you fall out of a wheelchair, you don't "break you neck."
And if you do fall and break your neck, it's not "one day" in the hospital.
But one day is all it takes to go and pick up the neckbrace -- and use it as a prop.
Sorry. He's faking it.

(2,188 posts)It's not like he's out for money and wants to sue. Would you have said the same think if President Carter had fell? Well why not? He's around his age.

(836 posts)I think an accurate translation of this media story may be as follows:
"Not wanting to answer questions from the FBI about possible criminal activity dating to back to
his days as CIA director and just prior to that, and continuing to the present time, former US President GH Bush
has decided to pretend he has a medical emergency, preventing him from being able to speak or answer questions.
Consequently, GH Bush is now wearing a neckbrace -- and falsely claiming: he fell out of his wheelchair, onto his 'neck' and 'broke his neck.'
But miraculously: no injury to his neck exists, no spinal cord injury exists, and how one falls out of a wheelchair onto one's neck has yet to be explained or disclosed by any medical professional.
Obviously, GH is currently unavailable to now answer questions in an on-going criminal investigation. By virtue of his fake medical story, he publicly announces and directs that others involved in his decades conspiracy of criminal acts also pretend to likewise be unable to speak."
Accurate translation? Yes, I think so. Call me a cynic. Call me crazy. But former CIA Director GH Bush must be feeling some heat, IMO.

(5,586 posts)Besides, he doesn't need to injure himself to avoid questions from anyone.
He can claim he doesn't remember shit, or spout of some story about how he and Reagan were on a boat together once. He can say stuff like "wasn't he the pope who did the thing to that library?" Or some other nonsensical crap and nobody is going to say anything about it.

(51,308 posts)I don't know the circumstances of the fall, but he may have twisted his neck suddenly while trying to recover from the fall, he may have struck something with his head - causing the neck to whiplash, or any number of things.
Have you ever broken bones? I've broken a bunch. The first was at age 7 while JUMPING ROPE. Broke my little finger.
Now you explain to me how I managed to do that, and we'll both know.

(5,586 posts)Especially if you're in your 90's. What they're saying is not farfetched at all.

(65,616 posts)First I've ever heard of bones in the neck that are superfilous, but that wouldn't be the first time since I only know of the spinal cord bones in the neck...there must be some not so important ones that I don't know anything about.

(51,308 posts)according to the reports I've heard.
People at that age can break bones very easily.

(836 posts)And require more than one day in the hospital, IMO.

(51,308 posts)A few years ago I had major shoulder surgery to install 18 bolts due to a horrific break.
They said I could go home the same day if I had someone to drive me.
I didn't, on that day, and I was released first thing the next morning when a friend arrived to pick me up.

(16,646 posts)If all you do is "crack" the bone, about the only thing you'll experience besides the pain is swelling. Keep that under control and your spinal cord will be fine. Technically it doesn't even have to cracked all the way through to be a "broken bone".
Rex
(65,616 posts)So it is a fractured bone in the spinal cord, must be a tiny fracture.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)It will require a brace regardless.
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)It's a cracked/broken vertebrae, not the spinal "cord". The cord is a nerve that runs down a path in the vertebrae.
Rex
(65,616 posts)He must have fallen and landed on his neck.

(41,208 posts)Though painful, breaking a bone in the neck is not life-threatening unless the spinal cord is damaged. The neck brace will prevent that from happening. Scary, however, especially in someone over 90.

(836 posts)Judge Wants Proof Of Daleys Medical Hardship To Avoid Park Grill Testimony
July 8, 2014 12:10 PM
By Todd Feurer
CHICAGO (CBS) Former Mayor Richard M. Daleys word wasnt good enough for a Cook County judge to excuse him from testifying in open court in connection to the Emanuel administrations effort to break a long-term deal with the operators of the restaurant at Millennium Park.
At a hearing on Tuesday, Cook County Judge Moshe Jacobius said Daley will have to provide more information showing hes too ill to testify. His lawyers have said hes not well enough after the stroke-like episode he suffered in January....

SURPRISE: Stuart Irby doesn't have to testify
After much legal skirmishing between the prosecution and defense, Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green cancelled the September 16, 2009 interview that was scheduled for Mr. Irby and attorneys for both sides. The order stated
"The Court finds and ORDERS as follows:
(1) Stuart Irby suffered multiple physical injuries and brain trauma... in a vehicle collision on February 11, 2009....
...Moreover these treating physicians advise the Court Mr. Irby's involuntary participation in even a simple interview at this time would likely "worsen" his condition, would setback his brain injury recovery, and "cause harm" to their patient."....
IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED AND ADJUDGED that the September 16, 2009 interview interviews previously ordered by the Court are hereby suspended...

Also, later, in 2012, this headline: "Irby commits suicide after wife's prison release"

(836 posts)I believe GH Bush is a liar, for various reasons known to me.
Others have their reasons for also believing GH Bush is: a liar.

Grover Norquist: George H.W. Bush 'Lied' to the American People
August 19, 2012
By JAKE TAPPER via THIS WEEK
Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist dismissed recent criticism of his tax pledge from former President George H.W. Bush, saying the 41st president had "lied" to the American people by raising taxes while in office.
"When George Herbert Walker Bush ran for president, he promised the American people he wouldn't raise their taxes," Norquist said this morning on "This Week." "He lied to them. He broke his commitment to them and they threw him out of office four years later."
Bush famously said "Read my lips: no new taxes" during his 1988 campaign, before going on to raise taxes during his only term as president....

Explanation: Obvious troll is obvious. Been registered since 2002 but 50% of their recent posts in the last 90 days? Who'd you used to be? What was the handle that was banned that caused you to resurrect this zombie account? Plus the blatantly racist recent obsessive posts about Jeb Bushs' wife (see http://www.democraticunderground.com/10026964904, along with others) that are just SO disgusting (she doesn't speak English well, therefore she's not a citizen). I know that this many posts is beyond the purview of MIRT but really, this is a troll. A nasty, racist, conspiracy theorist troll.
Thank you.
