My girlfriend is the boss for three radio stations in our little town. (35,000)
Talk radio is going off the air on the 27th of this month. Rush, Glen Beck and Hannity will be gone.
They will be replaced by "classic country".
Some people are going nuts, claiming conspiracies. The truth is, the corporate heads saw a big drop in
advertisers over the last few years, and made the switch for monetary reasons.
I have wanted this, and complained about the talk format for years because of it's right wing slant.
She has been getting calls from listeners freaking out. "Obama is to blame."
Well, it's happening. At last. The collective IQ in my town will rise soon.

truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)and talk radio in general--the talk format is moving to fewer and smaller stations. So I think we will be spared country-wide lunacy at least...but look for even bigger whacks in some markets.

(40,168 posts)but I'd thoroughly enjoy watching Limbaugh's empire collapse while he was still alive.
I do think it is dying out. It's too much overload.

(50,566 posts)that ANY rightwing misogynistic racist fucknut will be a target of boycott. Limbaugh has been the most effective target, but we can and will move on to other hate talkers if his ship goes down completely (Michael Savage -- watch out). We have the ability to quickly organize through social media and the advertisers should realize that.

(58,724 posts)For years, Rush would go on and on about Carbonite and how he uses it to back up all of his data and how it is the only service he would trust to do so. He would talk about it in a way that you didn't even think it was a commercial. He wouid just segue into talking about Carbonite and how great it is from his other ranting - there was no clear indication that it was a break for an ad. It seemed like he just used this service and wanted to tell folks how great it was.
Then magically one day, he stopped talking about Carbonite and now talks about iDrive and how he uses iDrive to back up all of his data and how that is the only service that one can trust to do so. And again he tries to make it seem like he is just talking about it naturally.
It's kind of funny.
All these RW talk show hosts do this (sports talk show hosts too) - where they just start talking about some product they use without a clear and distinct indication that they have shifted into a paid commercial.

(32,723 posts)Some guy stuck in the air conditioned cab of a giant harvester slowly and mindlessly going back and forth in an endless field of wheat. He had only four choices on the AM dial:
- Country and Western
- A fire and brimstone preacher
- Classical
- RW Talk starring Rush, O'Reilly, Hannity, Savage, Levin, Dr. Laura, etc.
That's the classic demographic they were shooting for to make "DemocRAT" a dirty word in the farmlands of America.
Then along came satellite radio and the monopoly to brainwash was OVER.
RKP5637
(67,112 posts)brainwashed too. They are parrots.
Joseph Goebbels is undoubtedly proud of RW talking stars Rush, O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck, Savage, Levin, Dr. Laura and the rest of the despicable herd.

(67,112 posts)an Internet Radio, thousands and thousands of stations from around the world. I had no idea Internet Radio had advanced so far. I just did this recently, I was so fed up with local terrestrial radio.
I had thought of just using the PC, but the packaging/menuing with Internet Radio is phenomenal. I think I can post this here. I picked up this one that seems to be tops without going overboard in cost. Grace Radio Mondo https://gracedigital.com/shop/mondo/ I basically use it as a tuner on a great old restored antique radio I have ... brought the vintage radio screaming into the 21st century from 60 years ago! It's pretty cool!

(62,433 posts)Wife got it for me for christmas about 5 years ago. Best damned present I ever got.
oddly - I spent many years trying to organize folks to bring community radio to our town. Due to the wife's health problems I finally gave up, but another person took my place. It may be on the air in a couple of months and on the internet.
We hope it will be radio worth listening to.

(135,425 posts)We Muslim Kenyans just LOOOVE us some "Classic Country," and part of his ouster was contingent upon getting that form of music to grace the airwaves!!!
Town by town, city by city, we will do the bidding of our leader and distract listeners from their radios, even jamming the radio signal if necessary, so they switch to "All Things Considered" or that station that plays merengue music at top volume!! It's a plot, I tell you, a plot!! And I, as a stalwart soldier in the Muslim Kenyans 4 Obama Brigade, salute our fearless leader!!!! Soooooon, soooooon, the RUSH will be OVER!!!
It IS Obama's fault!!!!!!!

(5,648 posts)..... to get the edge in debates with some of my right wing friends. It was amazing that most of them were repeating almost word for word what Rush said on his radio show earlier in the week. Not only did this make my friends very predictable in their arguments and vulnerable to good counter arguments, but it also left them open to implications that they weren't thinking for themselves and letting someone else do their thinking for them. It was an example of "you you know your enemies so you can defeat them".
Eventually I got to the point that it wasn't worth listening to that garbage and Rush's predictable arguments were easy enough to defeat on the fly. But my point is that a lot of people, even smart people listen to these talk show hosts for two reasons: 1. They like hearing someone "important" justify their own positions and 2. they want learn how to articulate effectively what they feel inside. I don't think those needs are going to go away if Rush was kicked off of all of the airways tomorrow.
ProfessorGAC
(65,134 posts)Cuz, you know the ears bleeding and all that.
But, i do completely agree that when every talking point is two dimensional, it is not that hard to counter on the fly.
