The GOP and Their Iranian Legacy: Remember?

While some of you aren't old enough to remember, and some choose not to, we already gave the GOP it's chance to handle the Iranian situation. It's now known by many names: Iran-contra, Irangate, Contragate, the Iranian crisis, or perhaps we should call it Reagan's not-so-little secret.

Back when the players were on different teams, we were happy to supply Iran with all the weapons they could buy. You see, Iran was on our team then, because they were fighting the evil people in Iraq. Sound familiar? The problem was it was illegal to sell arms to Iran due to an embargo, but we've never given a crap what the world, or international law, says. We're Americans damn it! So Reagan's administration illegally sold weapons to the Iranians! Yes, you got that right. The bogeyman we're so afraid of today, was on our side not too long ago. So guess who played middleman for our illegal arms trading? Our good friends in Israel were glad to carry water for Reagan, delivering the illegal weapons to Iran, providing the proceeds to bankroll yet another ongoing illegal activity going on in Nicaragua. Of course, Israel doesn't share any culpability or seem to remember that either, and there isn't any agreement now which would satisfy them.

Reagan took the money from the illegal Iranian arms sales and had to do something with it, so he decided to illegally fund the "Contras", who were fighting the Nicaraguan government. You see, our government wasn't pleased with the direction of Nicaragua, a sovereign nation, so we did what we do, we interfered. What made it a little more interesting was the drug component. While the "Drug War" was getting cranked up in the US, the CIA-backed contras were major drug suppliers to the United States. Ironic, huh?

In Summary, we sold illegal arms to Iran, and used the money to illegally fund terrorists and drug suppliers in Nicaragua, who in turn were nice enough to comply by raping and killing civilians and supplying our major US cities with heroin, cocaine, etc.

So when the GOP starts bleating about how bad Obama's Iran deal is, let's remind them that they had their chance, and they screwed the pooch.

Sure the names have changed, and we'll put the bogeyman hat on Iran this year, but the game hasn't changed. It's all about more fear and more weapons. Every attempt at peace is resisted with all the might of a big bloated elephant, and as usual when all the hot air is expended, there's no alternate plan or good ideas, just a big fat No!

To accomplish all this, Reagan had to set up a shadow government, a secret apparatus that could illegally sell illegal arms and use the illegal profits to illegally fund the illegal contras. The shadow government, second government, whatever you want to call it, is the most breathtaking assault on our Constitution in our history. Nothing else even comes close. For his treason, Reagan should have been impeached and died in prison. Instead, he's extolled as "our greatest president ever." He is our absolute worst president, not just for the Iran-Contra deal, but that alone would qualify him.
