McCain has suffered depravation as a POW that is impossible to understand. And he is entitled to the respect for having served under such conditions. The problem is that he has not done much to support veteran's issues and has not actively championed veterans causes because it goes against the real stance of the GOP in general
The GOP has quietly diminished the care of vets and allowed policy that injures the care of veterans and disable vets. Yet vets erroneously vote for GOPPERS over Democrats. The GOP policy on veterans is quiet neglect at best. And in some cases they have actually cut veterans' benefits. Meanwhile they wave the flag and use veterans and props.
Even though McCain is entitled to respect he has also used his veteran's status for his own gain. He is self serving in this respect. Sure McCain suffered tremendous abuse. His POW status does not necessarily make him a hero. And his conduct while a POW remains clouded.
Trump went over the top and probably damaged himself further. Had he handled the situation differently he could have made strategic gains. Trump's anger has more to do with McCain's immigration stance as much as anything.
As a Senator McCain has been a disappointment. He looks more like a incompetent opportunist than he does a reasoned Senator. And his "warmongering" shows a disregard for putting others in harms way without reason. As a vet he should know better.

The system was good as it was but the influx was more than the system could handle ..... Because it has been drastially under funded for decades.

(6,409 posts)The Donald said it poorly, but McCain is a disappointment to veterans, at least to this veteran. He was actively against upgrades to the GI Bill that would have given Iraq and Afghanistan era vets the same educational benefits I had, which I used to pay for my BA and about half my masters degree. The GI Bill changed my life, and I was astonished that McCain would not just fail to support it, but actively speak against it.

But for Trump to call him out goes beyond the ken; the guy is a total blowhard and I hope one of the hateful things he says will bring him down (Hispanics and rape, everyone bypassed that one. Ugh. ).
