http://www.bradenton.com/2015/07/18/5900854_palmetto-mobile-home-park-bans.htmlThere have been reports as many as 28 Carlyn Estates residents have received eviction threats for accepting food from a food pantry.
Pearl Jones, 81, said Friday she received a handwritten letter from Tonia Sonju, manager of Carlyn Estates Mobile Home Park in Palmetto, ordering her to stop taking deliveries of food from the nearby Hope Church, which was bringing boxes to about a dozen homes in the park, or she would face eviction.
(snip)
Jones said the park owners, who paid $5.2 million for 14.14 acres and 111 home lots, do not think anyone in the park should need free food. Trailer park residents, mostly seniors, pay monthly
rent in the $400 range. Most residents own their mobile homes.
"This lady is from California and she said no one in here needs it," Jones said of Sonju. "She thinks everyone in here has a lot of money. Well, I need it."

(904 posts)Evict someone for taking food assistance? I hope this lady seeks some professional advice, cause this doesn't sound legal to me.

(22,336 posts)It's a private street and the mobile home park is a private business.

(1,495 posts)for someone to get evicted over it. The landlord is violating the residents right to"quiet Enjoyment" of their property.

(14,177 posts)But, picketing the owner of the park that would be legal. I am sure there are other creative ways to destroy a person's reputation. Facebook can be used rather effectively that way.

(904 posts)Found it in the comments after the article and news travels fast. Looks like senior advocacy groups and legal aide are going to help with this and also arranging for volunteers to deliver food to anyone that needs it.

If not, and I'm sure they don't...
Well, I'm no lawyer, but I don't think they'd have a leg to stand on.

(28,473 posts)And I can't imagine it's legal, either. Just because something's written in a lease doesn't mean it will hold up in court. I think the owners have stepped in it and will live to regret the eviction notices, and probably regret ever buying the park in the first place.

(90,767 posts)So much so that the owners are willing to evict people for accepting food donations. Because, you know, that won't tarnish their image. Evicting the elderly and other needy people is acceptable to them - people receiving help with food isn't.
With that kind of ego they could be friends of Trump.

(82,849 posts)It's time we quit putting people with the sensibilities of Tonia Sonju and her paymasters in charge of stuff. They're cruel persons who do things like this when they run out of puppies to kick.

(2,841 posts)sounds like a straight-up you know what!
And I'm watching my words not to offend anyone, even though what Miss Sonju did to these elderly citizens is a hell of a lot more offensive,

(28,860 posts)... and win a big settlement for them from the owners.
That would take care of the owners' food bank problem, methinks.

(15,882 posts)Food is one of those unique things, including water, sometimes medical supplies... People will be calm and courteous until they are not. And then you better be prepared if you are gonna stand in the way.
It gives the hungry person who may have to face a jury a decent chance at a sympathetic defense, perhaps.
The little nazi owner needs to remember she is only one person, and if she is going to threaten people's lives they have a right to defend themselves.

(6,679 posts)They paid a buttfull of cash for that land and want to run out the current residents so they can turn around the lots to rich people. The place is a few blocks from the gulf in an area that is building up fast.
Bet your last nickel on it.....
She went too far this time. Society is about to put the smackdown on her.

(22,336 posts)The quote about how the people have $400 a month for rent so they shouldn't need food assistance is ridiculous too. There's some serious cluelessness there.

(41,831 posts)I know many in our city get food assistance from Meals on Wheels and if not for that they would probably starve to death. I am sure most Republican's don't care if an elderly person starves or not, but this is inhumane, and I really hope the owner is not only sued, but that money is turned into food for everyone who needs to be fed.
