Beginning of the End for Trump?

Donald Trump’s “surge in the polls has followed the classic pattern of a media-driven surge. Now it will likely follow the classic pattern of a party-backed decline,” Nate Cohn writes.

“Mr. Trump’s candidacy probably reached an inflection point on Saturday after he essentially criticized John McCain for being captured during the Vietnam War. Republican campaigns and elites quickly moved to condemn his comments — a shift that will probably mark the moment when Trump’s candidacy went from boom to bust.”

“His support will erode as the tone of coverage shifts from publicizing his anti-establishment and anti-immigration views, which have some resonance in the party, to reflecting the chorus of Republican criticism of his most outrageous comments and the more liberal elements of his record.”

Weekly Standard: “Donald Trump confirmed two things during a stop in this central Iowa town Saturday: He has no class and he may well run as an independent when he does not win the Republican nomination.” (emphasis added by me - DV)

The people who support Trump have no use for McCain either, so those comments will just strengthen their support.

The party biggies don't know whether to shit or go blind over Trump. They can't stand the guy, but if they come out too strongly against him, he could bolt and run on a third party ticket, more or less guaranteeing a Democratic win in 2016.

I think he enjoys being the subject of controversy and having the media swarm around him.

Will be when the establishment GOP see his his numbers go up now, and don't understand why or what's going. The wide eyed look of horror as it dawns on them that they are no longer in control.

Georgia would go blue instantly, as would Indiana.

*please, please let Trump run as an independent*

Of course, if he ran as the official GOP candidate, all of the USA would follow the pattern of the 2012 Indiana senate race: one batsh*t crazy Republican versus one sane Democrat = landslide victory for the Democrat.
