Bedford believed blacks had a right to be shipped back to Africa, or if they wanted to stay, quarters and work would be found for them under indentured-servant type conditions (only longer), or if they wanted their own jobs back as slaves, well, . . . . Yes sir, first there was Nathan Bedford Forrest and then that Jonny-come-lately, Martin Luther King, Jr. . . . It must hurt to come in second."
