COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) As South Carolina pulled down the Confederate flag from Statehouse grounds, the statue of avowed segregationist .. Ben Tillman watched. Tillmans statue seems safe for now ... Some lawmakers suggest putting excerpts of Tillmans speeches on the monument. Tillman bragged about his role in a lynch mob that killed seven black Republicans as part of a voter intimidation scheme in what became known as the Hamburg Massacre in 1876.
