Jake Tapper calls out GOP hypocrites: ‘There’s no place’ for being swiftboated ‘unless you’re a Democrat’

On Sunday, CNN host Jake Tapper reminded Republicans who were outraged over attacks on Sen. John McCain’s war record that their entire party had been united in smearing then-Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry’s military service in 2004.

CNN correspondent Dana Bash pointed out during a panel discussion on State of the Union that most Republicans thought presidential candidate Donald Trump had gone too far over the weekend by suggesting that McCain was not a hero because he was captured during the Vietnam War.

“Historically, you just don’t go there, you don’t go there against any veteran,” Bash explained. “You certainly don’t go there against somebody who was, you know, effectively in a box for five years.”

Turning to Texas Republican Rep. Will Hurd, Tapper recalled that delegates at the Republican National Convention wore Band-Aids with purple hearts to mock Kerry’s wounds during the Vietnam War, which was a continuation of the successful “Swiftboat Veterans for Truth” smear campaign.

Rep Hurd (R) answers “You don’t criticize anybody’s service...”, but does not address the fact that his party does this. Frequently. Viciously. Effectively.

Who will have the guts to get in Jeb's face and remind him?

but it was a safe issue for them to finally go after trump on. because criticizing him for his attack on hispanics would be harmful to them.

They get to play the victim card. Stop picking on poor Johnny
Meanwhile, Trump is right and hes not backing down. The more they /we all discuss this issue, and this is now an issue, the more we get to remind everyone that Max Cleland, and John Kerry and Tammy Duckworth were just recently brutalized brutaly disrespected by asshole republicans.
Thank you Donald, Im actually starting to like this guy just because he is willing to say things that other people are afraid to say.
We need more people like Bernie Sanders and Liz warren who are willing to stand up to the billionaires who work behind the curtains to steal our country. Its our country. We built it we defended it and we are ready to watch TV in it too, if thats what it takes.

That is, he had better be a fundamentalist Christian, crew cut, conservative and for a militaristic foreign policy.

Veterans who do not fit that archetype will get no respect from Republicans.

kind of sidestepped the question. Very deftly I might add. Though he did say "no matter what party, you don't do that" (paraphrased), he was still not willing to admit that Repubs are definitely hypocrites when it comes to this subject.

We must remember it is ALWAYS open season on Dems, not matter what the topic.
