House ethics panel weighs report on South Bay’s Honda

The U.S. House Committee on Ethics is considering whether to proceed with an investigation into allegations that Silicon Valley Rep. Mike Honda allowed improper collaboration between his congressional and campaign staffs.

The ethics watchdog committee said Monday it had received a report from the Office of Congressional Ethics and is considering initiating a separate investigation into whether Honda’s campaign organization and his official staff coordinated on a roundtable discussion with the State Department.

A committee notice Monday said there would be a decision by Sept. 3. The panel noted that the fact that the investigation has been extended “does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred or reflect any judgment on behalf of the committee.”

The investigation stemmed from an article published by San Jose Inside suggesting Honda’s chief of staff, Jennifer Van der Heide, coordinated with his re-election campaign to compile a guest list for a roundtable discussion at the State Department. The story cited e-mails that portrayed the State Department event as a perk for prospective South Asian campaign donors. Honda, D-San Jose, co-hosted the roundtable with Mitul Desai, senior adviser for strategic partnership at the State Department’s South and Central Asian Bureau.

How much you wanna bet that the article published by San Jose Inside was planted by Honda's perennial opponent, Ro Khanna (DINO-$iliValley)?
