A very smart albeit misguided friend posted an article comparing the Iranian situation (and the nuclear deal, I suppose) to Neville Chamberlain and his assurance that the Nazis were no threat, etc. Besides the difference in technology enabling us to know if troops are amassing via satellites, drones, what is the real difference that would silence him? He actually deleted the post in deference to my objections, but I want to try and educate him.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

(38,613 posts)Chances are 99.9999% that he's just parroting bullshit he heard on tv or radio. There is no comparison. He made the claim, so the burden is on him.
Don't expect much

(1,357 posts)Then he sent me a link to an article about it by Dennis Prager. I don't know this twit, but all signs point to asshole.

Thanks!

Tell him that you side with the President, the diplomatic teams of six nations, and the nuclear physicists corroborating the science of the inspection regime.

(82,849 posts)Point out that we tried the invasion-and-occupation route twice recently, and we don't have much to show for it. Well, there's the dead soldiers, dead civilians, devastated countries, and our new best friends in ISIS, so not a total debacle trying for a military solution. The Iran deal has been brokered by a true multi-national coalition, not the sham "coalition of the willing" Bush bribed, cajoled, and threatened together. It's been approved by the UN Security Council, and is the sort of diplomatic defusing of a tense situation everyone says they want, but that some hotheads refuse to consider.

Mister Ed
(5,943 posts)I'm thinking it might work with the sort of person you're describing: a smart and fairly well-mannered guy who works as a financial advisor.
You and he would never have to argue or discuss the matter any more, since you've both tacitly agreed that time will tell. But as the months or years go by, and the agreed-upon date draws closer, he'd be thinking about it from time to time. Perhaps, going forward, he would be more cautious about parroting other right-wing talking points.

I objected to your post on many levels, XXXX. First of all, your viewpoint is one that is promulgated by the people on Fox and Friends. This is not what most people believe and by limiting yourself to living inside the Fox bubble, you are damaging your perspective. Secondly, the comparison of Iran and Nazi Germany is such a false equivalency. 80 years ago, we had no quick way of determining if a country was amassing troops or weapons until the invasion was upon us. Now, we have such advanced technology that any unusual activity by Iran will immediately be known. Thirdly, the disrespect that was shown to President Obama is unprecedented in our history and is racially motivated. You can disagree with the POTUS's policies, but you must respect the office. And fourthly, I thought you were smarter than this, XXXX.
Here are some links for you to review if you are sincerely interested in the truth and not talking points.
I am not a debater and will not engage with you on a point-by-point discussion. I am just concerned that you are putting some of your business relationships at risk.
