NYT: At booking, Sandra Bland told police she had EPILEPSY and was taking KEPPRA.

Keppra is a drug that is NOT supposed to be suddenly discontinued. Doing so can cause seizures.Suddenly changing the dose (or going off it?) can increase the risk of suicide.

So did they let her continue to take the drug while she was in jail? Even without having a medical person check her out?

Documents say Sandra Bland told officials when she was being booked into a Southeast Texas jail that she suffered from epilepsy.

A suicide questionnaire that was among booking documents released Wednesday by Waller County shows that Bland also told them she was taking the anti-epileptic drug Keppra.

The documents also contain discrepancies. In another document, one that was to be filled out by the inmate and that contains Bland's signature, "no" is circled by the question asking if she's currently on any medication.

Bland was arrested on July 10 after a traffic stop. After being pulled over for failing to signal a lane change, the stop that was recorded on the trooper's dashcam escalated into hostility. At one point, when they are off-camera, she can be heard telling him she has epilepsy.

Important information

Do not stop using Keppra without first talking to your doctor, even if you feel fine. You may have increased seizures if you stop using Keppra suddenly. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.

You may have thoughts about suicide while taking Keppra. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, irritable, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Wear a medical alert tag or carry an ID card stating that you take Keppra. Any medical care provider who treats you should know that you take seizure medication.

Keppra may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. Do not start or stop taking Keppra during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both the mother and the baby. Seizure control is very important during pregnancy and the benefits of preventing seizures may outweigh any risks posed by using Keppra.

Before taking this medicine

You should not use Keppra if you are allergic to levetiracetam.

To make sure Keppra is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

kidney disease;
depression or other mood problems;
a history of mental illness or psychosis; or
a history of suicidal thoughts or actions.
You may have thoughts about suicide while taking this medicine. Tell your doctor if you have symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts during the first several weeks of treatment, or whenever your dose is changed. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.

1. This is very important in this case..and a point I tried to stress last night on NBC News web site..

First let me say that this was/is a very sad story about a woman who shouldn't have died because of circumstances originating from a rather insignificant traffic stop. But did...but now we have a few more facts. There is "potentially" a much bigger story but most if not all of the media is so focused on cop right/wrong...Sandra Bland right/wrong angle they are missing a much bigger factor here.

We know that she tried previously to commit suicide after loosing a baby..but luckily her death was prevented. She was also caught on video yelling at the cop that she had epilepsy and...

As reported by the Washington Post overnight..
"A suicide questionnaire that was among booking documents released Wednesday by Waller County shows that Bland also told them she was taking the anti-epileptic drug Keppra.."

Now anyone that knows anything about epileptic drugs...knows that Keppra for some people, has some very nasty side effects. Here are some examples..

" crippling morbid depression, uncontrollable anger and irritability - i have never in my life felt so depressed that i've wanted to kill myself until taking this medication. i've always been pretty upbeat, if a little irritable due to some minor everyday life stress like paying the bills. Now, i need to focus all of my daily attention just to suppress the suicidal thoughts and anger, like i'm a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. My neurologist says it should level off after 4 or 5 weeks and then i'll feel "normal". Yeah, as if feeling like i want to die constantly is "normal".

"A new study has determined that only some epilepsy drugs increase the risk for suicide. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires a warning of an increased risk of suicide for all epilepsy drugs. Newer drugs with a higher risk of causing depression than other epilepsy drugs, such as levetiracetam (Keppra), topiramate (Topamax) and vigabatrin (Sabril) were found to increase the risk of self-harm or suicidal behavior among people with epilepsy..."

Obviously we'll have to wait for the full investigation to get more information but if you're on (or have been on because it stays in your system for some amount of time) Keppra and you get into an extremely stressful situation (as she surely was) ..severe depression, rage, anger, depression and suicide is and has been a possibility with this drug. If she were to start then stop taking it..that would be very bad. Do a little research into Keppra and suicide or anger..or rage..or deep depression I think very quickly you'll see what I mean. The FDA requires a suicide warning on Keppra..

about this at all. I'm going to keep yelling about it till I hear it addressed.

4. Yes, she did. And she told them on the intake forms, and named her medication.

But there is no intake form showing a doctor prescribed it for her WHILE SHE's THERE -- which is something that had to happen.

I think she went all three days with no med -- with dire effects. This would not be unusual. Jails are notorious for being slow to get inmates on needed medications.

5. I wonder what the third version of the truth will be, after the second autopsy!?

Wow, so cops (might have) filled out some of her paperwork...I wonder if this was done after she was dead? Amazing how the truth is so fluid now that an objective-outside source is going to look over the body.

Or it could simply (and tragically) be that they were so mad at her (how dare she know her rights!) they ignored her medical condition and (oops) mistakenly left a trash bag in her cell with no one monitoring her actions.

Either way, since she is not the first person to die under mysterious reasons in that particular jail - no stone should be left unturned.

doctor or nurse to get her medication situation taken care of, so she went all three days with no epilepsy med.

This wouldn't be unusual for a jail, especially in Texas, apparently.

Suddenly stopping Keppra has dire effects -- it can cause seizures, and it can lead to suicide. Either way, it's the jail's fault if they didn't make sure she had her medication.

7. True, it is either negligent homicide or homicide. The trash bag didn't just magically appear there.

Poor lady, she had her entire life ahead of her. All this, because the cop was impatient and unruly. All he had to do was ignore her snark, give her the citation and then go catch whomever it was he was after in the first place.
