We can all be very proud of Congressional Democrats today! As one of the speakers at the news conference introducing the bill pointed out, the reality of last month's Supreme Court ruling permitting same-sex marriage is that in the majority of states, LGBTQ folks are now free to get a marriage license on Friday, get married on Saturday, and then get fired or evicted on Monday. This bill extends the already existing federal protections from discrimination based on race, sex, religion and ethnic heritage to LGBTQ persons. This law is needed. And it is long, long overdue!

(8,401 posts)...Also, the testimonies of people who have been the victims of precisely the kinds of discrimination this bill would prohibit, in particular a lesbian couple, whose infant daughter was turned away from a pediatrician because of her parents' sexual orientation, at about 32:00. There are also fine speeches by, among others, Senators Jeff Merkley and Cory Booker, Steny Hoyer, Nancy Pelosi and Jerry Nadler.
The bill so far has over 155 co-sponsers, including 40 in the Senate.
Frankly, I'm shocked, and rather disappointed, that there seems to be so little interest in this here on DU.

(33,615 posts)with as much chance of passing as a tax hike on billionaires.
The only way it would go through is if the GOP is allowed to turn it into a legalize discrimination based on religion law.
It's a good gesture, but don't hold your breath for it's passage.

(8,401 posts). . . but if Republicans block or defeat it, then it becomes a big issue for the 2016 elections. I'd prefer that it pass, but if it doesn't, plan B is not a terrible consolation!

(33,615 posts)but most Americans don't care about job discrimination against LGBT. The ones that do already voter DEM. It will be a non-starter.
It also will never come to a vote.
I am not denying the importance of this, and I fully support it happening. It's just that politically, it is not a big issue and isn't going anywhere.

(8,401 posts). . . There are a lot of people in this country, both Republican and Democrat, who have LGBT family member or friends. A sister of mine and her husband are a prime example. They are Republicans, but my sister has a brother (me), and she and her husband have a number of close friends who are lesbian or gay, they are very supportive on LGBT issues. They may not go out of their way to vote for pro-LGBT candidates, but they will certainly vote against any candidate who would actively oppose legislation such as this. And I believe there are a lot of folks out there like that (especially among Independents).

(33,615 posts)I see no move to change that at the State level.
Name a single politician who lost recently for opposing Gay marriage?
I don't want to minimize that it is an important issue, I just don't see it swinging the vote.
