Hannah Jones, in the hospital with appendicitis, yelled for joy Wednesday when she heard the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to remove Mississippi’s state flag and its Confederate symbol from the civic center.

“That’s awesome, a blessing to hear,” the Cal State Fullerton student squealed. “I can’t wait to tell everyone” ...

But with the pending removal of the Confederate Cross and other state flags from the Plaza of Flags in Santa Ana, Jones has a new perspective on what once meant darkness. “This shows that marching and things like that pay off over time. We’re starting to see a peek of light.”

The OC Civic Center Authority, which oversees the plaza, today is expected to approve replacing the state flags with flags from the county’s 34 cities ...
