USS the Sullivans damaged during missile test...
WASHINGTON, July 23 (UPI) -- A missile exploded too close to a U.S. Navy destroyer causing damage during an exercise last week off the coast of Virginia, Navy officials said.
Chris Johnson, a Navy spokesman, told CNN the USS The Sullivans sustained minor damage to its port side when the missile exploded shortly after it was launched. He said no one was injured in the incident.
"On July 18 at approximately 9 a.m. (local time) a standard missile-2 (SM-2) test missile exploded after suffering a malfunction as it was fired from the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) during a planned missile exercise off the coast of Virginia," read a statement Naval Sea Systems Command provided to USNI News.
Photos from the incident show a fire on part of the destroyer.
Johnson said the Navy's Program Executive Office for Integrated Warfare Systems has launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
