NINA-no Irish need apply

How can I, as an man of Irish descent, negate both the overt and covert bigotry directed towards those perceived as "less than white" when in fact just 150 years ago my people were so perceived? As a minority Catholic who has seen discrimination, no matter how mild, how could I ever belittle the slights perceived by another minority group? I cannot...

My life has been so relatively easy and their's so hard it defies comprehension. I am assimilated and accepted. I post this here because as a white guy to post this in any protected group would be presumptive. White privilege exists as does male privilege and I accept i have gained by both.

To those of another race or gender please accept this-I may be mistaken at times, but I am never malicious. I read and try to absorb what I see in your separate forums. I am old but the future I want is better. Please know *I read all that you say.

I'm a Bernie guy but Martin is certainly my second choice. But this post is more for people I may have offended by my bluntness. Like "POC" or women I may have misspoken to...just like printing POC-I don't know how else to say it???There are both black folk and mixed racial people in my family and it is sad I don't even know how to say that without giving offense. A child I almost adopted as a foster parent was half black and still there seems nothing I can say that doesn't sound patronizing or off somehow. I'm trying real hard to be not just perceived as correct but to know how they would like me to say "they are different but I see them as my equal"....

So as a pet I chose a cat
Who's black and silky but somewhat fat
He's also worthless and often drools
and let us not discuss his stool

thank you for posting.
This to me is an important time - a possibility for real change to occur. For those of us with white privilege (also of Irish descent) it is a time to listen. We are learning so much that we had no idea was occurring to people we even knew. We can all be part of the change.

And they were orphaned by the English Court that sent their parents to the Penal Colony (Australia)
