Roundup ...helped kick-start a revolution in the field of genetic modification of crops. Since Roundup attacked all plants, Monsanto introduced Roundup Ready crops such as soybeans and canola in the United States in 1996. These crops were genetically engineered to withstand exposure to Roundup.

http://www.frost.com/prod/servlet/market-insight-print.pag?docid=JEVS-5N2CZG

Look at how effective GMO crops have been in increasing the use of Roundup and other pesticides:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/bethhoffman/2013/07/02/gmo-crops-mean-more-herbicide-not-less/

The pairing is so profitable (thanks to US government subsidies) that Monsanto is now trying to buy the world's biggest pesticide maker, Syngenta:
http://www.motherjones.com/tom-philpott/2015/05/monsanto-syngenta-merger-45-billion-pesticides

The GMO crop + Roundup system has raised costs for food production and those additional costs are passed on to the taxpayers who kicked in $8 billion to subsidize GMO crop + pesticide pairings in 2014 alone.

Non GMO crops are sprayed with Glyphosate
to speed up harvests.

Specifically, Monsanto International published a paper in 2010 touting the application of Roundup to kill crops right before harvest, in order to dry out the crops in advance and produce a more uniform and earlier harvest (starting on page 28):

Benefits of using glyphosate:

***

Uneven maturity and green tissue delays harvest. Spraying glyphosate desiccates green foliage & stems. The photograph (below left) shows the uniform dessication of sunflower by the use of glyphosate(Roundup Bioaktiv) applied by helicopter in Hungary (Czepó, 2009a). The photograph (below right) shows complete foliar desiccation of grain maize on the right side 14 days after application of glyphosate (Roundup Bioaktiv) at 0.54kg ae/ ha in 7 0L/ ha applied by helicopter using Reglojet nozzles and including Bandrift Plus at 0.1 % at 34% grain moisture in Hungary, with the untreated visible on the left-hand side.

Farmers get up to three crop harvests
annually with the use of glyphosate.

Winter wheat, followed by soybeans, or corn.
Some plots get a very quick turnover.

When the crop dusters or tractor sprayers
are active we shut the house tight and
hope for the best.

Occasionally, we can taste the chemicals in the air...
meaning we are being sprayed along with the weeds.

It's effing unconscionable what factory farmers do
to their very own families and communities for profits

What can we do besides move? $$$

Understand than easily-digestible graphics, but I really suggest looking into actual peer-reviewed science. It doesn't have pretty pictures, but it does have actual facts. Here's a hint: glyphosate =/= GMO. Also Monsanto =\= GMO. If you want actual perspective, try actual science.

Monsanto can afford all the fluff science it wants but we're in the middle of the second mass extinction and you will never convince me that Monsanto's farming practices are not a huge part of that.

What if we put all those tax dollars and science behind sustainable agriculture?

We're simply poisoning our planet.

The planet will rebound. Humans may not.

Mass extinction...meh...what's on TVEE. If you cannot get enough people to even take the time or care enough about something like a global phenomenon that wiped out the dinosaurs, how can you expect them to rally around the idea of 'bad plants'?

Not a rant at you or the OP, just we seem to be way down the rabbit hole on this one.

If your problem is with Monsanto, then address that. GMO != Monsanto. There is other, very VERY useful GMO work being done, such as developing rice crops that are drought resistant... very important with the coming rise in temperatures.

Would you like to talk about Golden Rice? Or Arctic Apple? Or even the modern papaya (nearly ALL papaya are GMO to resist Papaya ringspot virus)?

If your issue is with Monsanto, then talk about Monsanto. GMO =/= Monsanto. Round-Up =/= GMO. This discussion is about GMOs, not RoundUp or Monsanto. Conflating them as one issue is intellectually dishonest.

Fact: Organic farmers are not required to pay fees for certification unless they wish to have their products certified as organic.
