I think it was an island in the Maldives that reported a sighting and that is even further north.

There were also claims of sightings in the Maldives

Reunion is 1500 miles from Diego Garcia, or roughly the distance from New York, NY, to Dallas, TX.



Diego Garcia is marked as "British Indian Ocean Territories" there.

flying low and slow over Kudahuvadhoo in the Maldives at approximately 6 am local time, the next morning after the jet took off at Kuala Lumpur. He said that sighting was very unusual, as there are no airports nearby that can handle a plane that size.

In fact, the closest airport that can handle a plane that big is at Diego Garcia. Use google earth to take a look.

those fishermen AFAIK had only claimed to see "a big jet" or something similar...

And it is noteworthy that none of those fishermen have been named in any of those "news" stories, iirc...
