I’d forgotten my own battle against Rebel flag

... For the first time, I listened and heard words that came after “Oh! The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home,” and my jaw dropped: “’Tis summer, the darkies are gay.”

I turned to Kenny Klein, then the sports information graduate assistant, now the media relations guy at the University of Louisville and asked, “Did I hear what I think I heard?” ...

I went to the library, found the lyrics to the song and printed them off and showed them to my suite mates Kenny Woods and Glenn Jones, both starting football players from Memphis ...

Going through the proper channels, the black advisory council did manage to get the point across that black students objected to the song’s lyrics ...
