Gov. Hogan to announce closure of Baltimore jail

By Justin Fenton

JULY 30, 2015 11:10 A.M.

Gov. Larry Hogan plans to announce the closure of the Baltimore City Detention Center — which in recent years was the scene of a widespread corruption scandal — at a scheduled news conference Thursday, according to local and law enforcement officials.

It is unclear when the jail would be shut down or where prisoners would be transported.

The announcement is set for Thursday afternoon. A Hogan administration spokesman declined to comment ahead of the event about what the announcement will be.

The Civil War era jail was taken over by the state in 1991, and has a history of corruption and violence. In 2013, federal and state authorities announced dozens of indictments of inmates and corrections officers on allegations of widespread corruption directed by the Black Guerrilla Family gang.
