Judge: Greenpeace must pay $2,500 an hour if protest continues

A judge ruled Greenpeace USA to be in contempt and issued sanctions of $2,500 an hour if the protest blocking a Shell ship continues.

Shell and Greenpeace USA appeared at an emergency hearing in federal court in Alaska on Thursday morning to determine if protesters dangling from a bridge in Portland violated a court injunction. Attorneys for Shell filed an emergency motion claiming that Greenpeace should be fined for violating the court's order.

The longer the protesters block the ship, the steeper the fines will get. Starting at 10 a.m. Friday, Greenpeace will be fined $5,000 an hour. At 10 a.m. Saturday, the fine will increase to $7,500 an hour, and every hour the protesters remain after 10 a.m. Sunday, Greenpeace will be fined $10,000 an hour.

This is insane. Too bad the protesters don't incorporate, then file bankruptcy and refuse to pay their fines.
