After speaking out about a sexist casting call on Twitter, Rose McGowan says that she has been fired by her acting agent.
The actor and director posted a screencap of a casting call requesting women to audition for a role wearing a push-up bra. The description makes it pretty clear that the prospective actor will be judged by her appearance, and while McGowan didn't say the name of the movie, her tweet made it obvious Adam Sandler was involved.Since Sandler's next movie is so offensive that some actors literally walked off the set, this isn't difficult to believe. This is the guy who said he signed a deal with Netflix because it rhymes with Wet Chicks, after all.The casting call got some attention online, but only as another drop in the ocean of evidence that Hollywood is still sexist. McGowan's tweets certainly don't seem controversial enough to warrant professional criticism, but she tweeted that she had since been fired by her agent. http://www.dailydot.com/entertainment/rose-mcgowan-fired-agent-sexism-adam-sandler/

(61,712 posts)I would assume that most casting calls involve specific requests for the types of appearances needed for roles. And I assume that experienced actors expect that. Therefore, I conclude that this particular casting call must have been outside the norm.

(53,235 posts)I watch movies and listen to music with no regard for the political leanings. If the actor or musician is good I'll support that art.
That said, I find the actors and musicians with right-wing political leanings produce shit material. I suppose James Woods is a "decent actor", but that's probably because I remember him acting in the role as the murderer of Medgar Evers, so maybe it was a natural fit.
I can't think of a right-winger who I like musically...maybe Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, but the ironic thing about him was his music was better when he was a lefty.

Some of his songs from the 1985-1994 era were awesome...since then he's a ding-a-ling.

Woods is too big of a racist for me to overlook. Used to like his work, but can't see him as anything other Mel Gibson level nuts now.

(38,187 posts)He is a great actor. Too bad about his political leanings. I do still watch his movies. He must be my exception to the rule, because I don't really enjoy many who are right wing. The one I can't bring myself to buy stuff they make any more is Orson Scott Card. He is so homophobic that I just can't bring myself to watch any of his stuff or read any of his stuff any more. It's sad. I was a fan of his, actually, before I found out he basically hates people like me.

(20,890 posts)I've never seen a funny Adam Sandler movie in the past decade. He's terrible these days and his movies horribly unfunny. Vince Vaughn went full teabagger and now I could care less about him too. Republicans aren't funny, say generic one liners they think make them a genius, and have ego issues. I avoid their movies. I simply won't support people ruining my state and country if I can avoid it. Movies are very easy to avoid.

(32,886 posts)Getting an agent to accept you into the stable of actors they promote is a big deal and yes actors are dropped by the agent much more than the other way around.
But that's still different than being fired.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)other way around. Rose's managers at Three Six Zero Group or her agents in Paris at Agence 3A or her attorneys are more than capable of dealing with any trasition but from what I hear her actual agent left her agency, so I assume Rose will retain her agent simply at a different agency. Or on her own. But that's my guess.

(14,093 posts)You know, the film, where, among other wall-to-wall sexist things, she plays a one-legged exotic dancer and Tarantino's character, prior to attempting to rape her, tells another guy her disability gives him "easier access."
The scene is played for laughs and is supposed to be composed of oh-so clever Tarantino dialogue.
Sandler sucks, and the casting call was despicable, but I find it a little odd she's complaining only now, given Tarantino's record of sexism and casual racism. There's a reason the guy is pals with Frank Miller.
Juicy_Bellows
(2,427 posts)And a damn fine one at that. You have to know film I guess to understand what grindhouse cinema was and what Rodriguez and Tarantino were trying to accomplish. I don't mean to be an ass but Tarantino and Rodriguez are good movie makers. Tarantino especially.

(6,324 posts)If the script calls for a certain build wearing a push-up bra, then that's what they look for.
It would be like calling the casting to play MLK racist because they only wanted black actors.
Don't get me wrong, Sandlers a scumbag anyway, but I think she is being a bit to dramatic here.

hundreds of millions to make a film that made only 20 million and lost to 'Ant Man' in its 2nd week. Sandler will now have to play Dr Doolittle when Eddie Muprhy retires if he wants to keep cashing bigger checks
Lancero
(3,015 posts)Pixels is at 108M costs - Production and advertising, give or take a few million - and has so far made 60M of it back.
And it losing to Ant Man isn't a surprise, even with it being in its second week.
Reviews are coming in, and they aren't good, but still it's just been one week. It's a bit early to label this movie as a finishing flop, especially since it's already made back just about 60% of costs.
big_dog
(4,144 posts)it will be a miracle if Sandler can make up the difference on internatonal grosses alone.
Lancero
(3,015 posts)The film was 88M to make, with a additional 20M for marketing and advertising.
Also, the film has currently made 102.1m back, so yeah... Despite the doom forecast, this film - monetarily at least - isn't going to be a flop.

i thought the budget was MUCH bigger. CGI is pretty darn cheap these days and they can probably make a little money off of kids buying the DVD's. but they still arent getting the huge profits that they once were from it

(161 posts)But actors complaining about being judged by their appearance?
davidn3600
(6,342 posts)It's always been that way...when a script calls for a certain look or physique in a character, they will find an actor that fits it. And sometimes that look is very significant to the movie. I mean you wouldnt want to see a fat, old guy playing Superman, right?
There are areas in Hollywood you can attack for being sexist, but mainly in the writing and producing areas. Many movies put female characters in love interest roles which better fits younger actresses. When they get older and can't really fit into that role anymore, they struggle to get picked for roles.
All that being said...Sandler has always been a dick. I haven't seen a movie of his in over a decade.

(10,175 posts)the same after Rodriguez essentially broke up his marriage for her, his wife was the real manager of Robert's career. Rodriguez has not had a single hit since Rose.
He spent years trying to do Red Sonja with McGown as the lead and also a Barbarella remake and no one would bite.

(10,175 posts), hopefully it will do better. After all it is still in growing mode. It's an awesome channel. Our first movie is being considered for it. It was Rodriguez's 10 Min films schools and stories that convinced me to become a filmmaker.
Personally I would have been looking at her track record.
I was madly hot for my ex wife. Ignored the fact she had had five marriages and other things. I didn't leave anyone for her.
I just ignored every warning sign. I paid for it big time.
But hey we are all geniuses in hindsight.
