Legendary guitarist forced to stay on tour to pay his medical expenses

Dick Dale, the "King of the Surf Guitar", is still on the road, playing nearly every night. Is he doing it for the love of music? Not exactly. The 78-year-old guitar legend has twice suffered rectal cancer, had parts of his stomach and intestines removed, lives with renal failure, diabetes, a damaged vertebrae and to top it all off, his wife is suffering from multiple sclerosis. And that's why he's still on the road. From the Pittsburgh City Paper:

“I have to raise $3,000 every month to pay for the medical supplies I need to stay alive, and that’s on top of the insurance that I pay for,” Dale explains. “The hospital says change your patch once a week. No! If you don’t change that patch two times a day, the fecal matter eats through your flesh and causes the nerves to rot and they turn black, and the pain is so excruciating that you can’t let anything touch it. That has happened to me because I was following the orders of the hospital.”

.........

“Sure, I’d love to stay home and build ships in a bottle and spend time with my wife in Hawaii, but I have to perform to save my life,” he says. “I’ve been living like this for the past 15 years, but I’m still here and opening my eyes each morning.”

I took the cheap route. Had all but 7 extracted for about $1,700.

Kind of a bummer though, because it seems I cannot play trumpet any more.

Since they had already paid for a filling less than 18 months ago for the same tooth, blah, blah, blah.

I maybe should have priced implants, but my dad had trouble with his (although he seems to be past that now).

That's why I opted for the 'final solution'. In the long run, it seemed like it would be easier, cheaper, less time consuming just to have them all taken out. Otherwise I probably would have needed a whole mess of root canals and crowns, but I also have a history of opting for extractions over canals. Then once I even tried to have a couple of root canals and the specialist said she could not get to the third root, so I had to have it pulled even after trying for a root canal.

If you don't have a supplemental policy you are on the hook for the balance.

Fortunately, Medicare has stipulated fees for procedures so it generally doesn't go into astronomical territory. But, if you have major problems you might still need to pay big bucks.

get the supplemental coverage at his age. If he can, it will probably be very expensive.

I know that the Medicare amount goes up the longer you are not in the system. If you wait to sign up until you are 70 or 75 the amount taken out of your SS check is higher. Would imagine it's the same for the supplemental.

I had to have cataract surgery on both my eyes a couple of years ago. My out-of-pocket cost was about $700. And quite a bit of that was for prescription eye drops before and after the surgeries. I now have added Plan D to my insurance and that has saved me a bundle on any prescriptions I need.

Thu Aug 6, 2015, 01:02 PM
Aug 2015

Anyone at any age who goes on dialysis automatically goes on Medicare.

Dale, for reasons of his own, chooses not to.

Even so, at his age he automatically qualifies for Medicare.

So his $3000+/month treatments are treatments that the single payer system we want to expand to everyone doesn't cover.

If he's in Stage III or IV failure, dialysis isn't required to stay alive though with some diseases, it's recommended that dialysis begin in Stage IV. But in end-stage, he would not be able to perform without some form of dialysis.

Wed Aug 5, 2015, 06:48 PM
Aug 2015

The fact that this world-famous guitarist doesn't have it easy, should open some eyes to reality.

I was a skilled guitarist/vocalist back in the 70s, who had played in a few solid bands,
but I chickened-out on a long-term career as a "working musician".
For me, it was the right decision.

But I respect anyone who made that choice and stuck with it, as being braver and more resolute than I was.

Being a musician is a tough, hard-working life with lots of sacrifice involved.
That's just the truth, well-known by any working musician.

I'm guessing that as a self-employed person, the premiums for him and his wife for any Medicare Supplemental Coverage plus co-pays plus DMEs for his ostomy comes to that much - which still doesn't seem to add up. I hope a fan who knows Medicare sees this and figures out something for him ...

She may not even be 50. So unless she's getting SSDI for her MS, she not eligible for Medicare and they are probably not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid.

The thing is, he owns 80 acres outside of Palm Springs. Perhaps he's tried to sell all or some of it and hasn't found a buyer. If he's just holding onto all his assets, he may be just be cash poor, but that's not the same as being destitute.
