However, that's actually a problem, because cops often aren't trained in just how lethal those can actually be at close range. We learned riot gear and tactics in the Marines back in the Pleistocene, and they would have had my ass if I had pointed a less-than-lethal round at someone that close. For that matter, they would have had my ass if I had gotten that close to a subject while armed to begin with (you never want to be in a situation where he can take control of your weapon -- you cover the subject from a distance while another Marine puts the zip ties on him).

So, there's multiple ways this is wrong...

Living in an isolated area, I had no idea how bad it always has been for people of color. The killing of Trayvon Martin was when I started to realize the dire situation. I did have some knowledge about how bad it was in Native communities, but just terribly ignorant about the vile and persistent institutional racism and even intensifying oppression of people of color. The poor Appalachian communities are also targeted, but since most people are white, the abuse is not anywhere close.

I now see black and Hispanic drivers routinely pulled over and harassed here in this rural area of my state. It is incredible the amount of harassment people are facing just driving through the area. It is terrifying and it is getting worse not better.

White people need to open their eyes to what is going on and stop being offended when this is pointed out to them. People need to stop being self righteous and start helping. The first thing that is needed is for everyone to admit we have a very serious and dangerous problem.

I hope this person can get legal help asap.
