doublethink

Haven't posted here in ages ... but just heard something on the radio I wanted to share ...

Mike Huckabee stated today and I paraphrase "No wonder Donald Trump is leading in the Republican poles ... he's got 10 to 1 coverage on everyone else in the media to the rest of us" blah blah blah ... etc... etc... Brought in mind to me "Citizens United". Ya think our elections can't be bought? Think it through and think again. Just thought it interesting that this concept would be brought forward by someone on the Republican side. Funny stuff if it wasn't so serious to the integrity of our elections. Peace out.

whipping boy of Republicans, esp. since media dared side with the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Of course, that was before a few mega-corporations owned most new media, as they do today.

I've long held the belief the media companies need to be broken up, and strict limits be put on how many media companies one person and/or organization can own.

On the other hand, I do believe the internet is helping on this front.

Usually in a shorthand reference to "the MSM" since that does a good job about covering all our gripes at once. Most of us believe our forth estate is screwed- the main reason I came to DU in 2004 was for alternate news sources.

It's a HUGE problem that the RW and Neos have almost full control of the MSM. They frame everything from their crooked worldview, making it all look mostly sane somehow.

I don't seem to remember huckie complaining about the media when it was the republicons getting the airtime over the dems. I do remember there was a study done on media coverage during an election cycle the pretty much said the republicons got not only more media time, but they were shown in a positive light far more often than the dems. Not a peep out of huckie until it is a republicon stealing his airtime. Maybe he shouldn't have quit Faux newz if airtime is his goal.

He should be happy that trump is sucking up the airtime. He sure wouldn't, along with his cohorts, want a 24 hour news cycle on how he think a 10 year old rape victim should be forced to carry her rapists child to term and be forced to raise it. Nor would Rubio like the cycle to focus on his stand on no abortion ever, no exceptions. Instead we get trump and his insults.

The media sees Trump as a ratings boost waiting for him to say the next outrageous thing.

He's entertaining and giving journalists something to talk about other than the same old politics. FOX isn't the only one obsessed with Trump either. CNN and MSNBC can't stop talking about him either.

Part of it is bad because he's drowning out some of the more bigger issues we should be talking about.

... If frequent "exposure" - devoid of any real content - really is all it takes to move polls, we're in more trouble than we thought. But it makes sense. If "ratings strategies" have gotten Trimp on top and kept him there despite a never ending stream of asinine blunders, then the power of money - and the simple name recognition it buys - is scary effective.
