Texas Woman Files Complaint After Officer Forcibly Searches her Vagina (trigger warning)

Texas Woman Files Complaint After Officer Forcibly Searches her Vagina

An African American woman in Texas says an officer sexually assaulted her when the officer searched her vagina for marijuana outside a Texaco gas station after a traffic stop last month.

21-year-old Charnesia Corley was pulled over for allegedly running a stop sign on June 21st, whereupon the Harris County deputy said he smelled marijuana. Corley was handcuffed and put in the back of the sheriff’s car while her car was searched for almost an hour. No marijuana was found.

The deputy then returned to his car and called a female deputy to conduct a cavity search. Despite Corley’s protests and lack of consent to a cavity search, Corley was forced to the pavement of the gas station parking lot, stripped, and searched. “I bend over and she proceeds to try to force her hand inside of me. I tell her, ‘Ma’am, No. You cannot do this,” Corely told local TV report station KTRK. “It’s undeniable that the search is unconstitutional,” said Sam Cammack, Corley’s attorney.

. . . . . .

A spokesman for the Harris County Sherriff’s’ Department said that “the deputies did everything as they should.” As the Washington Post put it:
“And so there you have it. Holding a woman down and forcibly penetrating her vagina to search for pot is official policy in Harris County.”

Corely has filed a complaint with the Harris County Sherriff’s’ Office Internal Affairs Division. The County Sherriff’s Office is refusing comment until the completion of the internal affairs investigation.

But I don't apologize for thinking and saying that she's a sweetie...

Hells bells, she doesn't look like a hooker, (am no authority on hookers, so maybe she is one). To me she looks like a librarian or the lady who works for a preacher, and I hope he's not the one who forcibly penetrated her for physical pleasure...

The older I get the less I understand and need to be reproached by young people like you. Thank you.

Mon Aug 17, 2015, 09:31 PM

Does that mean she's incapable of being raped or sexually penetrated against her will, or somehow more deserving of rape or sexual penetration against her will?

Seems like you're doubling down on this idea of her not looking like a hooker, she looks like a librarian, looking like a church-goer. A charmer. A sweetie.

Ugly people, and prostitutes, and non-church workers and people who can't even read are all capable of being raped or sexually penetrated against their will. They are no more deserving than this lady is.

And if you're sad to be reproached by someone my age (how you know my age is a mystery...) then perhaps you shouldn't say things, and say them repeatedly, and stand by saying them, that really should make the hair stand up on the back of anyones' neck, regardless of their age.

Tell us, what do you look like? Would your looks cause others to think 'gee, she really deserves a police officer to shove their fingers up her vagina for no reason"? Because you're basing this woman's right for justice upon her looks and her place in your notion of proper society. That's sick, and that's wrong, and I don't give one good goddamn how old you are, that's a shitty attitude to have.

Again, I like the doubling-down on shitty remarks.

I know lots of 77 year olds. Some of them don't look like librarians, and some of them do look like hookers. Guess they should wear metal panties to prevent their completely justified (in your eyes) sexual assault.

Please PLEASE don't ever be on a jury for a sexual assault case. You MUST tell them that you believe someone's right to justice after an assault lies in how they look and what job you imagine them having. Not whether they were actually assaulted, but what they looked like when they go on TV to talk about their assault. Pretty = raped. Ugly =

I... my... I... my.. I... me...

When an OP includes a "trigger warning", that means that the post contains information about sexual assault and/or violence which may be triggering to survivors. It is usually a warning to the survivor AND a request to other posters to keep the thread a "safe place". It's not a time for sexism. It's not a time for victim blaming. It's not a time for baiting other posters and amusing yourself at their expense.

Now maybe we should all just get the hell off of your lawn...

that anything that penetrated was a rape. Why else did he call a female officer to do it. If he knew, why did they do it?

How many of us would have called it a rape if we were not given the definition? That's the first time I ever heard of a female cop searching a female anywhere could be called a rape. I thought that even border cops search anybody anywhere when they get off a plane, etc. I've heard of females being searched "there" for drugs or jewels...

The female who hung herself with a plastic bag in a Texas jail was also totally humiliated by having her head beat into the ground and missing her first day of work in a new place. Educated lady too.

This lady has some good lawyer advising her...and the cops should pay for this rape and humiliation.

But that's why DU is here, to express different opinions. I've never been a "me too" person, even when evidence is legal when it lacks logic.

Texas, woe is me.

and the cops should realize that since no guilt has been proven, an exam like that should be done in private, curtained, and not flat out on in a parking lot where others can see her being accused at worst, humiliated at best.

And Miss Corley is fortunate not to have been held in a nice Texas jail, put on death row and executed, all according to the rules.

As a female officer I sometimes had to do searches like this- sadly women carrying contraband there is more common than you may think. And sonic men carrying items in their anus- especially into prison.

Given what's presented here, had I been called to this scene to do a search I would have refused, called my supervisor and asked him WTF his officer was thinking.

You need a lot more PC than was presented here for such an invasive search. And if your going to conduct it you transport the person either to the jail intake (where incoming male and female prisoners alike get cavity searches) or to the hospital
ER where the search can be done in a private area, not out in a damn parking lot.

It could well be classified as a rape, but in real life does a rapist call a female to penetrate another female's vagina? Makes no sense to me to call this a rape. The victim was safer to call it that because racism would have been more difficult to prove.

In my judgment, and I'm not always right, this is a case of racism, and the victim perhaps seemed a bit "high-hat" for lack of a better term, to the officer and the officer wanted to "put this classy black woman in her place." They found a bit of marijuana (.02) on her, obviously BEFORE the vagina search which lasted over an hour in the car, which would have been a crime. But the humiliation was what the officer needed....

This is more like South Carolina, an invisible flag, and hate.

"Makes no sense to me to call this a rape."

Here is a Public Service Announcement for you: Forcibly entering a woman's vagina is rape. It's rape if she's pretty, it's rape if she's ugly, it's rape if she's charming, it's rape if she's obnoxious... It does not matter how old the woman is, it does not matter how young the woman is, it does not matter what color the woman is, it does not matter what religion the woman is, it does not matter what her job is, it does not matter what her marital status is, it doesn't matter what she was wearing, it doesn't matter where she was going.... Rape is rape.

After reading all your posts in this thread, I can only suggest that you seek help immediately.

You have zero respect for rape survivors and your attempts to keep talking about what this woman looked like make me want to puke.

I keep trying to figure out what you're saying but can't get past the " but in real life does a rapist call a female to penetrate another female's vagina?"

Not sure why you're saying "in real life" here but I think you mean that it doesn't make sense for one person to call someone to assist them with a sexual assault or rape. Basically the first deputy held her down (by threat of arrest) while the other deputy assaulted her.

Yes, there is probably racism at work here too. That does not negate the sexual assault aspect.

that I worked with over 40 years ago, and she was a friend, she was in her early 40's and I was in my 20's. I can't help but think of her when I see Corley and hope she sues the county. The cops acted as they were taught. The humiliation on the parking lot floor was not part of what they were taught I would assume.

I sympathize with her for this happening, but if you read the op, you'd realize that she's lucky that worse didn't happen:

A spokesman for the Harris County Sherriff’s’ Department said that “the deputies did everything as they should.” As the Washington Post put it:

Rape by instrumentality if you want to use fingers. Shameful.

Harris County (Houston and surroundings) is the death penalty capital of the world. Fourth largest city in the United States. Four million people living in the metro area, the largest city in a state that LOVES to execute people, questions of guilt or innocence be damned! I was a court reporter there for 20 years and it's a zoo. The complex of buildings that hold courtrooms, DA's offices, jails, Sheriff's Department, law library, parking, county administration, etc. is bigger than a lot of state capital building complexes.

Hasn't a Texas court ruled against this sort of behavior yet? If not, file it in federal court. This happened too often.

I know that cavity searches are legal, but they need to be done inside, not on the side of the road. There also has to be real probable cause for that sort of invasive search.

Edit to add: I meant cavity searches are legal after an arrest as part of the booking of the detainee.
