Not only is real estate mogul galloping in front of all other Republican presidential candidates, a poll from CNN/ORC released Tuesday showed he's also leading the pack as the second choice of GOP voters.
The poll found Trump had 24 percent of support among registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. In addition, he also led his GOP rivals as the second choice of those voters with 14 percent.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was trailing as the first choice for President at 13 percent. No other candidates polled at double digits.
Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson polled at 9 percent while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker each polled at 8 percent.
Trump was also chosen as the best candidate to handle ISIS, illegal immigration, the economy and social issues such as abortion and gay marriage. The former reality television star over the weekend released his policy paper on immigration, which included making Mexico pay for a wall along the almost-2,000-mile border with the U.S.

(33,497 posts)with his money, name recognition, and Nutty platform dealing almost exclusively with illegal immigration that Trump might actually get the GOP nomination. What a campaign that would be!

(6,342 posts)We assume it would be a landslide for our side, but it's scary to think about the what ifs....
We do have a lot of people out there who hate career politicians and the establishment and feel we need a "different kind of president." He's got virtually unlimited resources. If he wins that nomination, he'll spend a billion dollars if he has to.

(42,770 posts)does seem to be picking some republican-hating issues to be for - like affirmative action.
perhaps the party needed someone to break them out of their "party of no" mantra and there isn't another repuke that could do it (remember Huntsman). It had to take a self-financed megalomaniac to do it.

(3,660 posts)Just in case it's not, polls with many choices use second choice data to predict what the preferences would look like with fewer options to choose from. Very useful in political races but also for things like ice cream preference. I may prefer raspberry and white chocolate in common with 0.4% of consumers but be fine with chocolate as a second choice along with 67% of consumers. Stores offering only a few flavors will be sure to stock chocolate.
Hitherto Trump has been weak as second choice, implying he has a passionate but narrow following. If his second choice stats stay high, that speaks to a long staying power as others drop out. Good for us.

(80,708 posts)I suppose the only danger is him actually winning the general. I think our candidate - whoever that is - would clobber him, but I guess you never know.

(1,846 posts)as candidates drop out, Trump should get more support.
They are pitching a different story on MSNBC. They're saying voters will consolidate around an establishment candidate, with Trump then fading.
Isn't "Donald Trump for President!" a logical result in a society that
1). Tends to put film and TV personalities on a pedestal.
2). Turns news into a theme of the day message box, ignoring its fourth estate obligations.
3). Markets to us that we can everything we want all the time just to sell us useless products we don't need.
4). Provides TV channels, news, blogs that cater to just our individual point of view, enabling self confirming feedback loops that prevent learning and awarness.
I think so.

(21,925 posts)I just heard a discussion on CNN proposing that as other candidates drop out, their support will consolidate around non-Trump candidates suggesting Trump has peaked at about 25%.

(1,846 posts)This 2nd choice poll predicts consolidation around Trump.
Will be fun to watch what happens.
