Shocked- my lifelong deep blue Auntie, 80 years old, is voting for Trump. Help DU!

Last edited Thu Aug 20, 2015, 05:02 PM - Edit history (1)

Hi folks,

I'm kind of broken hearted as my deepest blue Auntie has announced very emphatically that she's for Trump.

This is a woman who was in leadership in her precinct, whose friends and kids are all Democrats, mostly.

She's the first person I know to support that insufferable narcissistic butthole and I can not believe it of her, but it is so.

I need to mail her his quotes because there's no talking to her on the phone about it.

Googling 'Trump quotes" and variables of the same I get a lot of fabulous photos of him looking very plausible with seemingly rational statements about leadership, but not the bs that I have heard from him.

I'll keep googling but would appreciate any good sites you folks can point me to.

Mahalo.

I have a feeling that Auntie wants big changes and thinks Trump is the only one who's generating excitement for real change. If that's the case, a deep blue liberal would be more thrilled by Bernie's platform, especially since he's moving way up in the polls and public support. If I were you, I'd talk with her about Bernie and show her a couple of his speeches, followed by one of the charts that show how fast he's moving up.

At least it's worth a try.

If she's impressed on immigration, you might google Trump immigration plan to pull up the analyses of the plan that totally destroy it. The cost estimates alone--which range up to $600 billion--are pretty devastating to a candidate who promises to grow the American economy and reduce the debt.

Some people are drawn to Trump because of his blunt talk and willingness to talk about things that most politicians don't want discussed, like the role of money in politics. Sanders is light years away from Trump on most issues but like Trump he seems totally unlike the typical die cut politician that many people are instinctively rejecting lately. Even if you support Hillary or O'Malley or Biden or whoever yourself, Bernie might have the best chance of luring her away from the dark side. Then she might be able to start looking at issues from a Democratic perspective again.

She's 80. We old folks can be incredibly stubborn. It will be better if she makes the decision on her own. I have learned over the years that facts and quotes just don't matter, unless they discover them on their own. My right wing brother has decided he likes Bernie Sanders (not from anything I've told him), he came to that conclusion on his own.

Just let her be and hope she comes around. It's not worth ruining a relationship.

My husband and I are in our late 60's and we would never, ever vote for Trump, however there are certain things I admire about him.

1) Everything is out in the open, no secret donor fundraisers where he makes promises he cannot keep.

2) He's forcing his opponents to spend their money countering his attacks on them, while he continues to make outrageous statements and gets free campaign coverage.

3) He's taking out his opponents one by one so we don't have to.

4) He seems to have neutralized the large campaign donors (Koch Brothers), how long will they continue to support candidates who probably will not be elected.

5) He doesn't seem to be Bible thumping or advocating that everyone carry assault weapons

6) We can live with him staying in the race for a long time, we're in New York State which will most likely stay blue no matter what he does.

Perhaps your Aunt has noticed similar "endearing" qualities. She's 80, she's been around a long time and probably thinks she's seen it all, then along comes Trump. Leave her be, listen when she talks about him and try to find out his appeal for her.

I hope I've been some comfort (probably not) but let's hope she comes around or she's in a state where it just won't matter.
