http://www.prh.noaa.gov/cphc/tcpages/?storm=Three-Cthe few major hurricanes that have directly hit the islands have come from the south, where water is warmest, and as a result of storms curving north to northeast. storms coming from the east usually curve north, weaken due to shear, and receive a weakening blow when running into the mass of the big island, Hawaii island.
a 100 mph hurricane in the areas shown on the map in the link above spell potential serious storm outcomes.

It has, but it is different. The resorts arent situated the way they were, some are gone.

I was lucky enough to be there before it happened, then after, to see the damage.
Factoid: 'Iniki made landfall on September 11, 1992. This became a source of wry amusement for Kaua'i residents nine years later.

20 feet. Never forget that.
They had to change all that after the storm.
May have been more than 20 feet, but it was close
Fun fact: Kaua'i instituted its first public bus system after 'Iniki -- because so many people's cars had been destroyed that they had no way to get around the island! The Kaua'i Bus is still in use today.

I never saw it before Iniki, but when I stayed near Poipu last year, it was lovely.
