Dems Warn Trump: Don't Showcase "Trump" Name on DC Hotel Property Leased from U.S. Govt.

August 18, 2015, 04:07 pm

By Jesse Byrnes

Dems don’t want Trump name on hotel: The Hill writes a pair of Democratic lawmakers are petitioning the Obama administration to block Donald Trump from showcasing his name on his new hotel in Washington. Reps. Ruben Gallego of Arizona and Tony Cardenas of California asked Trump be prevented from having his name “prominently displayed” on the newly refurbished Old Post Office building on Pennsylvania Ave., just blocks from the White House.

The pair cited Trump’s “recent and repeated remarks disparaging women, Mexican-Americans and other Latinos.”

"

We understand that the Department of Interior rightly prohibits the display of racist or insensitive emblems on lands it controls. In accordance with this policy and in keeping with the Department's recent efforts to bar the Washington Redskins' logo on public lands, we urge you to use all available authorities under current law to prevent the Trump name from being prominently displayed at the new hotel," they wrote.

A spokesperson for the Interior referred inquiries to GSA, which is leasing the property to Trump. A spokesperson for the GSA said the agency was in the process of responding to the lawmakers and did not provide further details. A Trump spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.

It is not the first time the Trump hotel, slated to open in 2016, has drawn scrutiny for its signage. Last month, some raised objections to a sign outside the building resembling the candidate's campaign logo with "Coming 2016" over the word "Trump."

The real estate tycoon's D.C. hotel was also thrown into the news when celebrity chef José Andrés announced last month he would back out of a Spanish restaurant project in the hotel, over Trump's controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants, prompting Trump to retaliate with a $10 million lawsuit for damages.

The lawmakers' letter was first reported by the Phoenix Business Journal.

Now, the guy's name is supposedly toxic?

Some of these politicians need to grow up and stop acting like children.

Trump has refurbished an historic DC US Postal Service Building the Government has leased to him. This is the People's Land and Building...and Trump does not own it.

From the article which you didn't seem to read:

A spokesperson for the Interior referred inquiries to GSA, which is leasing the property to Trump. A spokesperson for the GSA said the agency was in the process of responding to the lawmakers and did not provide further details. A Trump spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.

But I don't see how you can say his name, by itself, is racist or promotes racism. He could make a damn effective case that marketing the building as a Trump property would generate extra revenue, and that by not letting him use the name, they're interfering with the operating of his business.

... thought to put something about this in the terms of the lease, its a losing effort. Time, litigation costs - all down the tube, and he'll put his name twice as big and in flashing neon after he wins the lawsuit - just for spite. We have better things to spend time on.

... if he wins the primary and general, and becomes POTUS 45, will the Mexican border wall bear his name? Better yet, will we sell advertising space on the sides of the wall?
