Rumors begin in NY about a Cuomo-DeBlasio primary for Mayor

The first article I saw about this is paywalled: Imagine Cuomo running for NYC mayor, but here is another one that mentions it.

“Cuomo is like the cat playing with the mouse before he’s going to eat the mouse,” state Republican Chairman Ed Cox said on the John Catsimatidis radio show on AM 970 Sunday. Cox said Cuomo has the upper hand in the ongoing feud between the two Democrats — but could be sticking it to the mayor so often because he fears a primary challenge.

Look at the newsday article. The thinking is that Cuomo may not want a third term and he is more popular in NYC than Deblasio,

Cox noted that Cuomo posted a notably weak margin last year over relatively unknown primary challenger Zephyr Teachout.

If Mayor de Blasio wanted to take him on, because Mayor de Blasio does have the support of the far left of his party, I think the governor knows he might be in trouble,” Cox said.

It is clearly talking about the governor primary.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's spokesman states clearly that his boss plans to seek re-election in 2018. But official words, even when plain and plausible, can seldom squash a tasty notion dressed up as a political theory.

So try this one on for size: Cuomo for New York City mayor in 2017.

The thinking is that Cuomo may not want a third term at governor and could take a shot at mayor.

He is a vindictive bully who is almost universally despised by those who work for him in State government and hated throughout rural upstate NY. The only reason he is Governor is because he ran virtually unopposed in two separate general elections (Paladino and Astorino were never viable candidates) and any Dem running in the general election automatically carries NYC and Buffalo, and thereby wins. If NYC wants Cuomo so badly, they should just take him.

I can see him running for mayor. He aspires to run for President. If he runs for a third term as Governor, he might lose and his political career will be over. If he primaries DiBlasio, he could win, be elected mayor, and remain in the spotlight for another 4-8 years.
