A we approach the anniversary of Katrina, how many DUers remember her origins?
Katrina originated over the Bahamas on August 23 from the interaction between a tropical wave and the remnants of Tropical Depression Ten. Early the following day, the new depression intensified into Tropical Storm Katrina. The cyclone headed generally westward toward Florida and strengthened into a hurricane only two hours before making landfall Hallandale Beach and Aventura on August 25. After very briefly weakening to a tropical storm, Katrina emerged into the Gulf of Mexico on August 26 and began to rapidly deepen. The storm strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but weakened before making its second landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on August 29 in southeast Louisiana.

(269,056 posts)I'm no expert on hurricanes but someone who knows told me that the stronger they become as they depart the CV islands is the less likely they survive the journey.
My only worry is that he was never expected to make Cat 3

Unless the forecasters are seriously wrong, Danny boy won't be coming our way although most of us want him to give us some tropical storm/tropical depression rain.

It's the first time I've heard so many folks willing a storm in their direction.

(6,930 posts)There are some parched areas in the Carolinas that could sure use the rain. However, i do not wish any destructive weather on anyone. Nature usually has a way of making things right. We can hope.

Anybody that needs to buy/increase house insurance better do it before it enters the Gulf.

(7,107 posts)A nice Category 1 or 2 hurricane is due here in the Gulf Coast. I'm ready to host the DU Hurricane Party. Nice waterfront home to watch the waves come in.
