General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsPlease stop badmouthing Nazis. They were just passionate.
They were patriots. (Sound familiar?)
They loved their country. (Sound familiar?)
They wanted to protect their home-country from a scary conspiracy of foreigners who wanted to weaken it and destroy it from within. (Sound familiar?)
They wanted to protect their home-country from inner political forces that would overthrow the old bourgeois order and radically change society over time with their new ideas. (Sound familiar?)
They wanted to protect their home-country from those brown-skinned foreigners who immigrated, looking to build a new life. (Sound familiar?)
After all, the recent great war was practically won, only to see the head-of-state betray them and declare the war to be over. (Sound familiar?)
And they formed a political party that was very close-minded on ideas and any deviation from the party-line got you accusations of lacking "purity". (Sound familiar?)
Okay... Some buildings were firebombed, some people were assassinated/lynched, some people got beaten up. (Sound familiar?)
But stuff like this just happens. Okay? These guys are just being passionate! (Sound familiar?)
Now, please calm down. It's not like a guy who wants to be your head-of-state and draws huge crowds has already laid out which foreign country he would invade for its ressources once he gets into office.

So two yahoos from Southie in my hometown of Boston severely beat up a Hispanic homeless guy earlier this week. While being arrested, one of the brothers reportedly told police that "Donald Trump was right, all of these illegals need to be deported."

We can't be afraid to make these comparisons. He is the candidate of the American Sociopath.

Trump, not so much.

(90,061 posts)A lot of times I think these fuckers just want to beat someone up, engage in a bit of violent sport, it doesn't matter that much who it is. And some loudmouth like Trump comes along and they get to act out. If you tolerate that sort of dehumanization in your domestic politics, you are just asking for it. And we have a boatload of those guys running around in our politics now, and we always have had them too.

(24,692 posts)When you spread fear and hatred everyday in an effort to blame national problems on "others", this is what happens.
On one level Donald is no Adolf but the former does move the political discussion further to the right and gives cover to more RW'ers who will come later. Blaming immigrants, foreigners and other "others" for our problems will be more acceptable since Donald has shown that it appeals to a certain segment of American nativists.
And our 1% will keep smiling and urge us to go get those "others" and ignore the man behind the curtain.

(34,582 posts)I compared Trump to Hitler, and was told he was more a Mussolini. Trump uses race scape goating more like Hitler.

(10,558 posts)...are forced to repeat it, (sorry for the sarcasm but a point needs making here). The comparrisons are definitely
there. Fascism according to it's co-founder Mussolini was a strong government of by and for the corporations and backed by a strong military. ....sound familiar? He was instructed in this by a man named Giovanni Gentile. If i wasnt on a smart phone sitting in an E.R. I would post you the links.

(58,724 posts)It's the go-to comparison for far too many objectionable people and actions.
There are much more precise analogies that would be a lot more informative.
The Nazi analogy carries with it the implication of genocide and mass murder.
The people who "forget history" are the ones who go around calling anyone who is a little mean a Nazi (not that this is the case in the OP, but it's a pet peeve of mine).

(10,558 posts)This is one of the very few areas i disagree with him on. I'll even add to Thom's argument by pointing out that the Nazi's were fascist in name only. They weren't even true fascist so the comparison breaks down here. Thom further argues that our meme's (my words not his) regarding the NAZI'S paint a far worse picture than what is going on here in America.
My disagreement is that this history needs repeating because if forgotten it is far too easy to slip again into true fascism. Capitalism unregulated takes us there. Should we face a deepened depression as Italy once did, and there ARE plenty of folks unemployed right now, a strong charismatic leader could easily come along and once again point out how BIG GOVERNMENT is not working for the citizenry, that the JOB CREATORS need to be in charge. There are tons of Americans who are primed for this, we know them as Republican voters. Couple that with our having the strongest military this planet has ever seen and you have true fascism once again.
The best way to halt this is from within, before those on the outside go to war with us. I include economic war here because we are witnessing it as we speak. The current TPP is a prime example. The best way to do what needs being done is through an educated electorate. For this reason i call it fascism and not oligarchy as Thom does. We need the electorate fearful of it. They have no clue what an oligarchy is and if it promises them jobs...
It is likely that we are in some agreements but i hope you understand the severity of my concerns. They are not misplaced. Btw, ER visit almost complete. Awaiting pharmacy now.

(23,946 posts)Trump is a poor orator and has no policy issue not based on racism and bigotry...he would be nothing but for the wall to to wall fawning media coverage....their summer fling....and getting Grump to spend some very early campaign ad money while dating would be great!
But Trunp is not the only fascist waiting in the wings...there are 17 more wannabes.

Make America Great again. By following the playbook of the Nazi's in the 1930's?
Dear World; Could you please decouple yourselves from my country and turn us into an international pariah no longer welcome in polite society? Maybe rubbing our noses in what we have become will shock us into striving to return to the times when we did actually stand for the better ideals of human nature?
Like the greatness we could have had if Jimmy Carter served a second term!
