Donald Trump says the 'real' unemployment rate is 42%. He's really, really wrong.

http://www.vox.com/2015/8/22/9191001/donald-trump-unemployment-rate

The nation's unemployment rate is low. Monthly job gains are high. By all official measures, the US economy is in recovery mode. Not in Donald Trump's world.

"We have a real unemployment rate that’s probably 21%," Trump Time magazine this week. "Our real unemployment rate — in fact, I saw a chart the other day, our real unemployment — because you have ninety million people that aren’t working. Ninety-three million to be exact. If you start adding it up, our real unemployment rate is 42%."

Trump's inventing some new numbers, but this isn't a new line of attack from him: He's been openly skeptical of the government's job reports for years.

When I spoke with the Trump campaign earlier this summer, Trump maintained that the "real" unemployment rate was 18 percent. (Like so many Trumpisms, the number's gone inexplicably up.)

Indeed, those numbers are down but not by the numbers he says. Here's a good article:

https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2015/june/labor-force-participation-the-us-and-its-peers

Workforce participation of Americans age 16 to 68 was at its zenith in 1997 at 77%. Now its around 73%. There are certain trends that are problematic, like the drop in participation of prime age men - 24 to 54 - but they aren't dropping just in the US.

Unemployment is low because you have to do what you have to do. That is why the kids can't find jobs or the seniors who just need a little more money than social security provides.

When I go to Hime Depot or Best Buy, they are all filled with guys that were making really good money at a IT place I used to do work for. Now they are taking the jobs that the college kids used to take to help pay for college.

When you have a job paying good honest money and you get canned and take something at lower pay and benefits, you and your family is going to hurt. To me they are unemployed.

who want to work full time and "discouraged workers" who have given up looking. That rate now is a under 11%. When Obama first took office it was over 17%. My guess is there are plenty of people who have had to take early retirement at 62% because they can't find anyone to hire them.

But Trumps numbers count everyone between 16 and 68., including retirees, stay at home parents, the disabled, high school and college students and anyone who works part time by choice. He got this from David Stockman who standard for full employment is everyone 16 to 68 working 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year. Of course, that's a ridiculous standard. Not to mention baby boomers are retiring at a rate of 10K PER DAY, and have been for the last 5 years and will continue for another 10+ years. This massive number of retirees does have an effect on the total workforce participation number.

Capitalism is not perfect but has been moving hundreds of millions people from poverty to the middle class in developing counties world wide. Socialism does the exact opposite.
