'Used cat salesman' unloads 34 felines at Calgary Humane Society event

Spoof ad on YouTube pushes to find new homes for 'pre-owned' animals

The Calgary Humane Society resorted to the high-pressure sales tactics of a man in a tacky suit for its annual August push to find homes for the cats in its shelter.

And the "used cat salesman" managed to broker deals for 34 adoptions of cats and other animals in the crowded shelter, the society said.

The YouTube video was created in the run-up to the weekend event.

"Black cats, white cats, tall cats, short cats. We've got cats of all makes, models and colours. They're ready to practically walk off the lot," said the star of the promotional video.

The humane society also posted a hilarious video about the origin of the cat salesman moustache.

We have three, two rescue. We visit the shelter often and want to take many home, but fear we will upturn the balance we have. One is so shy she hides all the time.

The other two would probably welcome new friends and adventures. They are so cute it breaks your heart. I won't bore you with a description of my favorite, but good job Calgary.

I recently visited my small town shelter. They have over fifty "pre-owned" dogs and 150 cats (many kittens). The shelter director told me they keep them 90 days and then euthanize them. He added that if they have funds, they will try to stretch that 90 days for animals they consider adoptable (i.e. not feral), but like many shelters, they are low on funds. God bless the volunteers there that spend their time caring for and socializing these poor critters.

Puppies and kittens may well be adorable, but that stage doesn't last long. Meanwhile, and adult cat and dog already knows how to live with humans, and they somehow understand that they've been rescued, and reward their humans with a lot of affection and loyalty.

were older/senior guys. The downside is that they probably won't be around as long. Both of my boys were caught by kidney disease. I miss them so much.

Right now I am without cats, and I'm doing a lot of travelling so it would be completely irresponsible of me to have any. But someday, I warn people, I am going to be a full-on crazy cat lady. I will go to the local animal shelter and adopt only older cats, although "older" can be a bit of a vague term.

A while back I did volunteer work at an animal shelter, and the saddest situations were the ones where some person had died or gone into a nursing home that wouldn't allow animals. And no relatives or friends stepped up to the plate. More than once I'd see two cats together often ten years or more old, and they were going to need to be adopted together. By that time I already had two cats and it wouldn't have worked to bring two more like that into my household, but someday I hope to take in just such pairs. Or single older cats.

That's true if you get them as a kitten or already well into middle/old age.

First off, I commend ANY shelter for trying to save lives, and I'm happy that 34 felines got homes.

That said, I've been in rescue for over 30 years, and the gimmicks don't always work. People sometimes adopt from events like this on a whim without thought about what a real commitment a pet can be. A cat or dog can be as much as a 20 year commitment, they cost money, and they can wreak havoc on living quarters.

I'd wonder a year down the line how many of these 34 cats are still in the homes that they have gone. I'd hope for the best, but the reality is sometimes quite harsh.
