Trumps proposed roundup and mass deportation of the nations undocumented immigrants represents a substantial logistical challenge. If history is a guide, the effort would consume significant budgetary and law enforcement resources, could precipitate a national social crisis and might expose the country to reparations claims for decades to come.
The last large-scale roundup of US residents by the federal government, the internment of people of Japanese descent during the second world war, ultimately encompassed only about 110,000 arrestees, most of whom originally lived in a few major cities on the west coast. They were moved into camps in western states not across an international border. There are 100 times that number of undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of government data, and the migrants are not regionally clustered they live everywhere.
Big numbers, regional dispersion and civil rights intrusions are not the only challenges that would face President Trump. There is also a problem of the national will. Unlike in the spring of 1942, in the shadow of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, there has been no galvanizing event to swing public support behind drastic action against an entire group of residents, in the form of mass arrest and background checks.
Once everybody was arrested, a delicate public relations campaign would be needed to hedge against the risk that images of farm workers in zipties filing on to trains, crying grandmothers, overwhelmed immigration services centers, convoys of buses, or angry employers would provoke more general outrage and civil unrest.

A bit of 'cold shower' reality for the bombastic Mr. Trump. Of course, the Guardian is part of the liberal media so the base will pay it no mind.

(23,156 posts)A lot of jobs could be created to do this. The big unknown here would be if they'd be permanent jobs of if the deportations would be so successful no one would ever be here illegally again. If only temporary, then all the deportation jobs could be transitioned to farm work, janitorial, food service, and all the many things illegals currently do to keep our economy running. Win-win, right?

(14,449 posts)Have congress pass bills saying that illegals can't receive any tax payer money from food assistance to medical and everything in between. Sactuary cities would lose funding and other nasty stuff. The wall would be built on the border. That I am sure of because he has the companies he has used his whole life to do the work. Our country would be an ugly place.

(24,692 posts)The Donald knows that the way out of our problems is to stick to to THEM poor Mexicans and it will be a big win for US. Bernie needs to understand the real cause of and solution to our problems the way Donald does.
Thankfully, real populists like Bernie know that the 'big win' for US comes from taming our own 1% not chasing down poor immigrants all over the country and deporting them along with their children who are American citizens.
Only 40% of republicans support this idea. Support from independents and Democrats is, of course, much smaller. Of course, Donald's supporters do not care about any of that.
If this idea doesn't work for Donald maybe he can reinstitute the draft. Force a bunch of young people into the army and a lot of jobs open up for us 'undraftable' folks. Or revive Jim Crow laws. That would result in a lot of good jobs for Donald's supporters (white folks) that AA's are doing now. Or push 'family values' and have women go back to the kitchen and traditional female jobs like nurses and teachers. Lots more good jobs for white men.
I hope Donald is not reading this. I don't want to give him any ideas.

(10,650 posts)Only a small fraction of the population support such an inhumane action. No amount of PR could hide the human suffering.
Those of us on the left would resist with every means at our disposal. We would actually have right wing allies in agriculture. I would predict MASSIVE civil disobedience, even a nationwide general strike. Eventually, the deportation fanatics would have to back down.
