Even though Trump is a jerk in every respect. His continuing position in the polls and the public the better it is for the Dems. And the farther he moves the debate to the right. As long as the media focuses on him and forces other to outdo him the more damage it does to the other party. As a strategist I would not do anything to take him down. I might not necessarily help him either. I would let the GOP deal with him and hope they screw up royally.
We don't want to end up with someone like Walker or Kasich. Walker would have virtually a billion or so dollars behind him. We need to give the Kochs some real problems.
We simply cannot afford any Republican really in a position of power. They have just become too destructive. The more they suffer the better I like it.

(149,620 posts)The more he carries on, the higher his support grows among the older white males who feel disenfranchised. If he gets enough of them to keep his numbers up, he could get the R nomination--and the presidency.
I know it's a long shot, but we need to take steps to stop him.

(145,243 posts)Trump is hurting the GOP with some key voting groups. At somepoint, the Kochs and the GOP donor class will step in and then we can see some fun fights

(43,182 posts)He's exposed the GOP base as gullible racists. That's great. But your work is now done, Donald.
We're sick of your shit. And the notion that you could gain traction and get elected and essentially destroy this country in the name of your own ego is nauseating.
So...go home Donald.

(21,148 posts)I am sick of hearing him and theMsm fawning him.
The longer he stays in gullible dem/independents might start supporting him. He is a dangerous demagogue who is charismatic and like a certain leader in Germany in the 1930's picked on a certain segment of the population to scapegoat. And we all know how that turned out.

(32,886 posts)Galvanizing a large segment of the population behind a nationalistic and ethnocentric message is bad for the country.
And I am increasingly worried that Trump is a real threat to win the G.E.
Long term, it is destroying the ability of the GOP to appeal to Latinos and various other voters.

(10,602 posts)I get your point. What makes him desirable is his attacks on China trade. And Dems need to take note of that meme. So far no Dems except Bernie are pushing against free trade as we now have it.

(32,886 posts)For folks particularly on the right, never apologizing, being steadfast and not changing positions is strong.
Trump also doesnt appear to have any fear and why should he? His worst outcome is going back to the life of a multi-billionaire. So he really is at least behaving as if he has no fear of losing at all.
In any conflict or contest, a person who has no fear has a distinct advantage. It doesn't mean they are going to win, but it provides an advantage.
In a debate, he is not going to be afraid to say just about anything. Some folks will perceive that as not just being strong but being genuine. That's a tough look against Hillary.
Against Sanders, Sanders big strength is that he appears to be not your regular politician. But if you like that, you are going to like somoene who is not a politician at all even more.

(2,977 posts)I see absolutely no way he can win a GE. He will need 40%+ Latino vote, among others demos (women, other minorities etc.). Without massive fraud, there's pretty much no mathematical possibility of him winning a GE.

Dems to Win
(2,161 posts)Never underestimate the power of celebrity in America. Arnold Schwarzenegger won governor of California, easily, at a time when other Republicans couldn't win anything in statewide races.
I do not want Trump to be the Republican nominee, period. Too huge a risk he would win the GE.
The sooner Trump is shot out of the water, the better.
TheMastersNemesis
(10,602 posts)That is the problem that celebrity "trumps" common sense in too many cases. The worst celebrity was Ronald Reagan and we will suffer for who knows how long because of what he wrought.
I do not want him to be the nominee either. The trouble is they are all nut cases. And they are all a threat with all the money that will be thrown around.

(24,692 posts)political conversation even further down and to the right for a substantial length of time will only embolden, then frustrate, his RW base. I don't think that is good for the country in the long run unless it completely destroys the republican party which I don't see happening.

(11,175 posts)Most of the people who like Trump were never going to vote Democratic anyway. (There are some who like the image of a straight-talking candidate who's not a conventional politician. They might vote for Trump or Sanders against any of the other candidates, and have a decision to make if neither or both can make it to November.)
The important question is Trump's effect on swing voters. To some extent he makes the whole GOP look bad. On the other hand, his extreme craziness might help mask the more limited craziness of the 16 others. Someone like Walker might come across as a sensible compromise in some voters' eyes.
