In December 2012, a gunman walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and killed 20 children, six adults, and himself. Since then, there have been at least 887 mass shootings, with shooters killing at least 1,148 people and wounding 3,184 more.
The counts come from the Mass Shooting Tracker, a crowdsourced database that tracks shootings since 2013 in which four or more people were shot. As with any crowdsourced database, its likely missing some shootings, and some of the shootings are missing details.
Voxs Soo Oh created an interactive map with data from the Mass Shooting Tracker. It shows the mass shootings tracked in the database that have been verified with news reports since the Sandy Hook shooting:

(30,058 posts)NRA has not come up with a sensible plan, are they capable of defining a sensible plan? American by a large majority wasn't sensible gun laws, it would be a safe vote to put sensible laws in place. This needs to go down to the state level. In Texas, it was voted to allow guns on college campuses but they did not extend this in the state house, I wonder why they don't want the guns there.

(23,156 posts)And yet it's brought up over and over. Are cars designed specifically to wound and kill? How about fatty unhealthy foods?
Actually cigarettes kill about 400,000 U.S. citizens every year, so tobacco is right up there with war.
If we can't put some sort of control on guns until every other thing that causes death is done away with, or can't try to reduce smoking until there are no more deaths from obesity, we can't do anything at all.
My point was people die from preventable things everyday.
I think humanity needs to focus more on the leaders that promote violence and war and less on the tools of that violence and war. A tool is no good if people refuse to use it.

(3,275 posts)You have to pass both a written and driving test to get a license to drive a car. If you drive irresponsibly, you could have your license suspended or taken away. I have no problem with people having guns as long as there were tough background checks. Personally, I have no desire to ever own a gun. i don't really understand the appeal of them.

Have you heard anyone say "I'd rather be raped than have some redneck militia type try to rescue me"? Have you ever seen a similar statement on DU? I haven't, nor any of the other hypothetical "Anti-gun" quotes.
Yes, Self-Defense is the theoretical use of our oversized national private arsenal. Would that it were so. It is not born out statistically. Put this in your pipe and smoke it, Sarah Thompson, MD, John Lott-citing Executive Director of Utah Gun Owners Alliance:

(5,621 posts)but the plain truth is that there is a lot of rage out there. People lose their jobs, homes, family and have no hope left any more, and something breaks inside of them. People in this country have been stressed to the max, and sometimes it is one more little thing that pushes them over the edge.
Yes, guns are easy to use, but then so are vehicles or whatever you can think up that can cause the most damage. Why do people riot? These mass shootings are a symptom of our society. I understand that Canada has more guns per 1000 people than we do here in the US, but you seldom hear of mass shootings there. Their society is much more laid back than ours.
If and when our society starts to equalize, the mass shootings will diminish, along with murder/suicides, and suicides. Violence always breaks out when man or animals have to contend with survival stress for a long time.

(6,342 posts)The fact our culture has more hate and more anger than these other ones we compare our crime to.
We are far more materialistic and individualistic then practically any other country. We set lofty goals for everyone to reach the American dream that is getting harder and harder to achieve. We place heavy value on achievement and success.
Then you have poor mental health services. You have inequalities all over the place. And we live in a culture that worships violence.
Then we wonder why some people just seem to "snap?"

(3,995 posts)Is it showing the percentage of people who own a gun in each state? If so, wouldnt the number of people be far greater even in states with a lower percentage? For example, 30% of 27 million Texas residents own a gun, while 50% of 2 million Idaho residents own a gun. (And does that mean that 8 million Texans own one or more guns or are there 8 million guns total?) It would be interesting to see how actual numbers align with the map in the OP.

if individuals in Vermont own a greater number of guns per person than individuals in TX and FL, than your statistic and this map could both be correct. All this map shows is the percent of people who own at least one gun. You can own one or twenty-on guns, and this map only counts you once.

(13 posts)What the hell is that?
At what point do we look past the guns? Let's face it, getting rid of guns is a pipe dream. Any half-assed fabricator in a shed with a few hand tools can make a gun. It ain't rocket surgery.
Why are people in America so angry? Why is there so much depression? Why is there so little concern for life? I worked in the ER for years and the amount of people that come in beat up, shot, stabbed and otherwise assaulted is mind boggling. Focusing on one mechanism of injury seems a bit narrow minded to me.
