(58,721 posts)The actual quote, IIRC, was that she could see Russia from her porch. I think that makes it an untrue statement.

(46,436 posts)She said, "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska" which is true. Not to defend Sarah or anything, but you're thinking of Tina Fey.
(But you know that already - I'm just teasing.)

(61,698 posts)She was in high school (a senior) when its statehood was announced. She even remembered the teacher talking about it. So I thought she was an idiot for asking it.
I'm surprised anyone on DU would answer that it isn't or that they don't know.

(46,436 posts)Did you know that the area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is greater than that of South Carolina? Did you know that the two largest national parks in the country, Gates of the Arctic and Wrangell-St. Elias, are in Alaska? Did you know that Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley - thank you, Sally Jewell) is actually taller from base to top than Mt. Everest?
If Alaska isn't a state, it's definitely a state of mind.
(I just came back from 5 days in the Arctic photographing auroras. I love this place.).

(25,704 posts)Back when there were 48 states there was a movement to add Hawaii as the 49th state.
However, 49 stars on the flag looked funny, too symetrical. And besides, 49 is an unnlucky number. They put 50 stars on the flag to even things out. It simply looks better to the eye. Years before there was a desert called the Baked Alaska, and the flagmakers and cartographers thought it funny to call this nonexistent state "Alaska".
Since then all sorts of incredible details about "Alaska" have become part of common lore. Like the place is stuffed with grizzly bears, it has grown to a Bunyan-esque size that is half of the continental US, that Sarah Palin was rhe governor there of all things, even that they produce oil like Texas or Saudi Arabia. Some people think it is west of Canada.
Now I like a laugh as much as the next guy, but someone has to explain to kids that like the tooth fairy or Santa, Alaska does not exist.

Or show me a map how to get to your summer house in Brigadoon.
