He never wanted to own a football team - he just wanted to sue the NFL on anti-trust grounds and collect a paycheck. And the reason the NFL won the suit is just that - their (counter) claim was that Trump and a couple others were not in the business to own football teams, but merely to gouge the NFL. He talked a majority into moving the USFL season from the spring to the fall, to bring the issue to a head, and they went to court and lost, and that was that. The USFL owners who actually DID want to be a part of pro football were wiped out by Trump's cabal.

The USFL was probably doomed anyway, but even 30 years ago Trump was a con man and huckster.

As I understand it, the construction industry in NYC in the 1970's was controlled by the mob. If you were a real estate developer in New York at that time I doubt you would have much choice other than to deal with the mob contractors.
