Augusta, Ks. Confederate flags were flying at Augusta High school in the parking lot on Friday.
School leaders asked the students to take the flags off their trucks. The kids complied with school leaders.
But to be a minority in this town with that kind of intimidation, even though its just a symbol, its still a symbol of intimidation, says Amber, a parent in Augusta. Its a symbol of hate its a symbol of bigotry ...
I dont think they (the school) should be able to tell them to take them down, says Deanna, an Augusta parent. Its part of our history ...

(15,389 posts)I'm originally from nearby Clearwater, KS, (an even smaller town), and my mom lived there until her passing, and one of my sisters and her family live in the country, and her daughter and her family live there as well. They're all pretty conservative. It's a small farming community, more trucks than cars in the high school parking lot. There's probably some racial sentiment attached to the flag with some kids, but more than likely, most of them are not aware enough to look at as anything more than, "Mah favrit country singer's a rebel, and he's got this on his hat/pickup/belt buckle, tattooed on his arm/dog/kids. I wanna be a rebel too!"

(34,118 posts)I do see them now and again but not a lot.
Teabaggers, this state is full of them and they probably think we were with the South in that fight. History is not exactly their forte.
Pretty rural area, figures. Good for the school leaders. I hope they are ready for the crap coming their way.
