In the first place, the Native Americans were there millenia before Europeans.
In the Second place, did anybody make a stink about changing the name of
Cape Canaveral to Cape Kennedy and then back to Cape Canaveral? I don't recall
it, but that was a less media-saturated time.

OT: would you have ever believed 45 years ago that we'd still be here fighting some of the same fights we thought we won all those years ago. I sure didn't. I thought we'd be on to bigger and better battles. At least we haven't been held down and still have some fight left in us

(23,946 posts)There has been a massive propaganda campaign, repeating a lie relentlessly - Obama is an "other"- until a large segment of the public, to wit, racists, believe it and so can confirm and justify their racism.
In other words the reason for the very limited numbers of very outraged and only RW folks is the usual simple explanation - racism gone wild and encouraged by the media.

(2,586 posts)No doubt they would do the same when Clinton was president. The point is to whine about anything and everything, sometimes shifting to opposite positions (especially on foreign policy issues where the details aren't as closely followed by the general public); it is in general accelerating over time and indeed somewhat increased by Obama's race. But remember how ridiculous the GOP was during the Clinton years? That's a pretty high base line. The trick of strategic whining is that you target something and continue to act out your talking points no matter what the facts are (eg Planned Parenthood). By proceeding as if they were proven guilty rather than innocent you can gain a similar effect to having the facts on your side in a normally functioning democracy. It also implies throwing whatever you can at the wall and seeing what sticks (eg Benghazi). The notion that people anywhere give a crap about President McKinley is ludicrous, but just hearing swarms of politicians and political operatives and sympathetic media complaining about how Ohio (a swing state) has been slighted, well the idea of Ohio pride being slighted sinks in, especially precisely among a public that is so vague about their anger that large numbers of them are ready to support Donald Trump
It's a sign of the times that isn't going away anytime soon

(118,293 posts)Really, nobody would object if Obama went back home to Kenya and gave Swahili names like Denali to Maui or some other mountain there -- but proud Alaskans like Senator Boehner are understandably offended when Obama disrespects our heritage in this way

Oh, yes, he is Black and a Democrat.
Please understand that when you use irony and sarcasm, the trolls take it literally.....they really do not think that well.
This "Christian Nation"that they speak of is certainly a hateful one.

It's something that we're used to. If President Obama, or any other President in the future, wants to change European names, like Rainier or Puget, back to the original names, most people around here would be cool with that.

(15,805 posts)Republicans believe that the name HAS to be Reagan. Hell, they've splattered his name over so much stuff it's impossible to get away from it. It shouldn't be Denali, it should be Mt. Reagan. For that matter, EVERY mountain should have that name. And every river, every highway, every ship, every school, every government building....................
