... As .. Confederate flags waved once more Friday, NASCAR faced its recurring quandary: How could a sport so closely associated with its Southern roots broaden its appeal nationally without alienating that base? ...
... officials are determined not to make a scene at the same time with Confederate flags in clear view during the race broadcast. After all, the NASCAR chairman, Brian France, had declared that Confederate flags were no longer welcome at tracks after a mass shooting at a church in Charleston in June. When the series shifted to Daytona in July, track officials came up with an exchange program. They offered American flags to replace the Confederate flags there.
Wile said the same program would be in place at Darlington as well. Thats not exactly what happened on Friday, though, as track workers asked fans to take down their flags. The reason given: They blocked sight lines across the track.
Fans were not buying it ...

(17,301 posts)Seems the birthplace of the KKK, does not want to take down their racist symbols. Up until about 3 weeks ago I might see a southern swastika about once a month, but now they are flying everywhere and some are featuring a picture of Jesus in the middle. Nothing says stereotype White Southern racist like Jesus, hate and racism all in one eay to display cheap souvenir rag.

... Some of the fans ire was directed at Republican Gov. Nikki Haley, whose call to remove the Confederate flag from the State House five days after the killings at Emanuel AME Church led to flag bans nationwide.
Haley attended the Darlington race Sunday. She declined comment while walking around the garage.
Several S.C. fans said they voted for her in two elections, in part because she had no plans to remove the flag.
She thinks shes going to be vice president, said Herndon, a retired state transportation employee. Thats not going to happen if Ive got anything to do with it ...

(15,740 posts)HUNTSVILLE, ALFor the 135th straight year since Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, representatives for the South announced Monday that the region has postponed plans to rise again.
"Make no mistake, the South shall rise again," said Knox Pritchard, president of the Huntsville-based Alliance Of Confederate States. "But we're just not quite ready to do it now. Hopefully, we'll be able to rise again real soon, maybe even in 2001."
Pritchard's fellow Southerners shared his confidence.
"Yes, sir. The South will rise again, and when it does, I'll be right up front waving the Stars and Bars," said Dock Mullins of Decatur, GA. "But first, I gotta get my truck fixed and get that rusty old stove out of my yard."
