GoFundMe nixes fundraiser for Kentucky clerk
Site claims Kim Davis' case violates updated terms and conditions

The left-leaning fundraising site GoFundMe has declined to accept a fundraising campaign for jailed Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis.

Davis was jailed on Thursday for defying a federal court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges in June. She was ordered detained for contempt of court and later rejected a proposal to allow her deputies to process same-sex marriage licenses that could have prompted her release. She has become the symbol of religious opposition to the heavy-handed tactics of the “gaystapo” who are ramming same-sex marriage through at the federal level across the nation in opposition of religious conservatives.

Supporters attempted to initiate a GoFundMe campaign for her defense, but were thwarted by the site’s Terms and Conditions, which were updated on April 29 to specify the site can choose not to allow “campaigns in defense of formal charges or claims of heinous crimes, violent, hateful, sexual or discriminatory acts.”

which had raised a few$, but not much.
Indiegogo has adopted the same terms and conditions restrictions as GoFundMe, and I used their alert
process to request them to take down any Kim Davis defense fundraisers. Just checked, and two legal
defense fundraisers have been disabled on indiegogo. If you want some entertainment, though,
there are a couple of ones that are active for giving her a new brain and a gay makeover.

They would likely tell Davis they can't share with her because they don't want to foster a sense dependancy ... she'll just have to work hard to get out of her predicament ... just like they did.

The popular crowdfunding website, GoFundMe, quietly changed its public policies Wednesday after coming under scrutiny for shutting down a campaign setup for the Christian bakers facing a $135,000 fine for refusing to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding.

The difference in the wording of the policy is significant because neither the Christian bakers—Aaron and Melissa Klein—nor the Washington florist who also had her account shut down broke any criminal laws.

Instead, both businesses were found guilty of violating civil anti-discrimination laws.

Instead of prohibiting “campaigns in defense of formal charges of heinous crimes, including violent, hateful, or sexual acts”—as it used to—GoFundMe now bans “campaigns in defense of formal charges or claims of heinous crimes, violent, hateful, sexual or discriminatory acts.”

That the owners of GoFundMe are following their values in not allowing criminals to get rich from using their site, and in doing so they are not hurting any innocent people.

What if there was a GoFundMe site set up for the defense of an incarcerated Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks? ..."campaigns in defense of formal charges" Sure hindsight is 20/20 today. Just sayn'.

“campaigns in defense of formal charges or claims of heinous crimes, violent, hateful, sexual or discriminatory acts.”

Also, it says formal charges of heinous crimes, etc, not just any old formal charges.

it's hard to twist King's or Park's actions into the definition of acts that are hateful.

By saying 'formal charges or claims'.

And remember, they are a private company. They can make whatever rules and restrictions they like. Unlike the town clerk, who is funded by taxpayers and is supposed to be a public servant.

I was just trying to point out that we see our perspective from today -and only today. Imagine it's 1967 and it looks like the US is on the brink of falling apart, anti-Vietnam protests, draft card burning, Civil Rights marches and riots, the Watts riots, etc. Nobel people were brought up on "formal" charges. Some were violent like the Black Panthers, Weathermen, etc. (I'm not condoning any violence, but history is messy.) I think the policy was carefully crafted but I try and get people to think outside of just today.

Groups that were demonized back then look a lot more heroic in retrospect. But actions like whether GoFundMe will approve happen in today time.

Who knows? In 50 years, society could be totally changed. The Fundies could have held sway and Kim Davis could look like Rosa Parks does to us! (Happily, I will be dead then). And then GoFundMe will look really bad.
