LAS VEGAS The U.S. Air Force is giving an ultimatum to owners of a remote Nevada property that over time has been surrounded by a vast bombing range including the super-secret Area 51.
They're being told to take a $5.2 million "last best offer" for their property by Thursday or the government will seize it through condemnation.

(73,631 posts)$5.2 Mil ain't chump change for something that's no more than a hole in the ground surrounded by a bombing range.

(17,997 posts)I would be with you. But if they don't want to sell, then they shouldn't have to be forced to or have it confiscated. We do this much too often.
Just my humble opinion

(24,256 posts)but not all people are motivated by money regarding every life decision they face.
Especially when you are talking about land that has been in a family for generations.

(41,862 posts)and having the government just taking it, without any compensation, allows me to chose the best of the two alternatives. Unless you want to be Cliven Bundy and hang out on an over pass with your rifle pointed at FBI and Federal officials... YOUR choice ?
TeamPooka
(24,256 posts)an option.
There are always more options available when someone tries to limit you to only two.

(41,862 posts)The US government gives them a choice between getting paid for their land or taking it. Yeah, maybe you can try and take them to court, if THEY allow it.

(2,388 posts)at one point. The 5 Mil offer would have to be split among 20 owners or about $250K per owner.

(16,296 posts)It's several and when they divide up the pot each will end up with 1/4 million- nice, but really not that much to resettle in a new home. And that is sad alone that 1/4 million doesn't buy all that much housing today.
Frankly, they are comfortable and settled where they are and the Air Force should back down. That "official condemnation" doesn't sit well with me and smells too much like what is going on with the Palestinian/Israel situation.

(49,212 posts)The big problem with having a quarter mil to spend in rural NV would be finding a stick built house and not a trailer on a big parcel. I tried to look for examples but apparently online real estate listings haven't reached the great basin yet. The service I tried didn't even recognize relatively sizable towns in rural Nevada, let alone Rachel (the wide spot in the road nearest Area 51.) We're talking about places where you're practically landed gentry if you can get electricity without a generator and a two hour round trip to the closest grocery store isn't unusual.
You could buy a house in Reno or Las Vegas for that. Tahoe's out though. Maybe they should hold out for Tahoe money.

(2,388 posts)... The federal government gradually encircled the mine property totaling fewer than 400 acres northwest of Las Vegas, making it a private island reachable today only by passing armed guards at security gateposts. The surrounding secure 4,500-square-mile reservation for nuclear testing, military training and other research is almost twice the area of the state of Delaware.
"The land has become an increasingly greater safety and security risk as demand for test and training opportunities have increased," the government said in an Aug. 28 news release describing the final offer.
Today, Groom Mine overlooks Groom Lake, a site so secret that Col. Thomas Dempsey, a Nellis Air Force Base commander, would only refer to it on Friday as "one of many remote locations within the Nevada Test and Training Range."
